Um, I broke my laptop last night. :(
I went out with work peeps to dinner and drinks at the Ashy (it was a fairly quiet night), and came home. I noticed my laptop as sitting on my desk (dear god no!) away from its power cord and was in Stand By mode but very low on battery power, so I moved it over next to my bed (where it belongs). I put it on its little stand thing, plugged it in so that it wouldn't go into hibernation and forget all my work during the night, and turned around to get into bed.
But, in turning, I knocked over the stand. It fell backwards, and the laptop slammed down power cord plug thingy first. The socket is now busted beyond charging capabilities; the little pin in the socket is just plain gone, and it looks like the rest of the socket has been pushed out of line. The plug can still go in, but it no longer stays there and, duh, doesn't charge.
The laptop did, of course, go into hibernation and forget all the work I'd done for my editing assignment during the night because it couldn't charge.
Things I tried to overcome the problem:
1 - borrow brother's battery (we have similar but not identical laptops), and cycle them between laptops to charge them.
Didn't work because his battery is more powerful and could have fried my laptop.
Didn't work because his battery is more powerful and therefore has different charger specs, and could have overcharged my battery.
I.e. lots of damage.
2 - use own harddrive as an external harddrive in sister's laptop.
Didn't work because I couldn't
a) use the version of the software I have installed on the now-external;
b) install the software on her laptop without downloading stuff;
c) couldn't download the extra requirements because internet decided to disappear halfway through the download and I couldn't restart it.
I.e. lots of murderous frustration
3 - use my harddrive IN brother's laptop
Despite the occasional loud gear-shifts due to slightly incompatible hardware/drivers, this is working. I've managed to get just about all of the editing done now, and am about to start on one of my other assignments.
I am so jealous over this keyboard. Such good keys!!
Anyway, I'll be looking for an ACER repair shop/center/place in the next couple of days. This is probably the worst weekend for this to have happened, what with four assignments being due this week and another one or two the week after.
*grumbles*
