Road Trip/ Move

Apr 17, 2010 23:47

We made to Walla Walla, Friday afternoon after a 6 day drive from Vicksburg, MS. We added it up the other night, and we went through 11 states: Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington.

First stop was St. Peters, MO (outside St. Louis) and enjoyed one of my husband's favorite childhood food places Lion's Choice, a roast beef sandwich fast food place, and it was so good, I can never look at Arby's the same again. We stayed at a Drury Inn, and were unsure of how it would be. It was a great hotel, the room was small, but the amenities were great, there was popcorn and soda fountain all evening. There were cocktails and hot "snacks" from 5:30 to 7 (which with swedish meatballs, chicken tenders, hot dogs, nachos, and baked potatoes, was substantial enough that many appeared to make it their dinner) Then breakfast was a real breakfast with scrambled, eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage, waffles, and the usually cold selection. It was only the first day on our trip and the husband was having throat/sinus issues so we found a Walgreens with a mini-clinic and he ended up with antibiotics for a sinus infections.

Next stop was Junction City, KS, which is near Ft. Riley. So we went to a little park just across from the post that had an atomic cannon on display as well as two howitzers, and an armored personnel carrier. But what info online did not tell me that its quite a little hike up a what felt like a mini-mountain. I felt like I was castle climbing in Germany again. We also took a chance to do our laundry in the hotel that night.

Next on the road trip was Limon, CO, where there wasnt anything to do, well at least this time of year. There was a local museum but it is only open Memorial Day to Labor Day. The drive through Colorado was quite picturesque, though.

Then we stopped in Rock Springs, WY. The hotel there was Best Western Outlaw Inn and it had a strange layout, like it was once a motel with outside access to all the rooms with an open courtyard transformed into an enclosed hotel with an interior courtyard/banquet room. It had a really good restaurant inside though, a nice sit down place with great food. We even passed on the free breakfast choices and paid for items on the full breakfast menu. There were several attractions in Rock Springs, but we ended up finding out that our Saturn sedan was no match for the unpaved gravel/dirt roads you needed to take to get to them. We only made it less than 5 miles before we gave up and turned around. I think the dust irritated my throat, I had a sore throat for the next few days.Again the landscapes in the area were really picturesque.

Next stop was Twin Falls, ID, we passed through Utah on the way, stopping at a beautiful rest stop area in Echo, Utah. We did some sightseeing around the Snake River Canyon Rim. We didnt end up make it to Shoshone Falls, but we did see Perrine Bridge and surrounding paved trail area and even got to see some BASE jumpers. We stayed at Hilton Garden Inn was was really nice but we skipped their breakfast, which we were pretty sure wasnt gonna be cheap since it was made to order, and stopped at an IHOP instead.

Finally we made it to our final stop in Walla Walla passing through a beautiful section of Oregon and find our hotel room to be larger than expected. It looks to be pretty pedestrian and bike friendly area, so I shouldnt have any problems getting around while my husband is at work. Talked to a rental realtor today and saw a few properties, on opposite end of the spectrum. Need to do some more looking for apt/rentals to find a place asap. There are a few minor attractions in the area, so that should fill a few weekends while we are still at the hotel. Now just to get used to the time change, again.

Took a bunch of pictures on the trip, mostly through the car window, so we will see how they come out, and I will upload them somewhere on Facebook, Flickr, and/or Snapfish. Depends how they turned out. I generally put the ones I just want to share with friends on Facebook, ones I want to print on Snapfish and ones I am really proud of on Flickr. I will post a link on my LJ after they are uploaded.

Gonna try and relax some tomorrow before he starts the new job on Monday. I guess I need to look into the teaching job situation and if its worth changing my license this time and what that would entail.

walla walla, travel
