Nannette H. Hegerty became Chief of Police on November 19, 2003 for the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin Police Department. She joined the Milwaukee Police Department in October 1976 and served in various assignments including patrol, criminal investigations, vice related investigations and sensitive crimes. She attained the rank of Captain of Police and served as Deputy Director of the Training Bureau and commander of the Fifth Police District, Juvenile Division, and Sensitive Crimes Division.
In April 1994, President Clinton appointed her to the position of United States Marshal for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. She served in that capacity until May of 2002. Under her leadership, the Eastern District of Wisconsin was awarded the 2001 “District of the Year” award by the United States Marshals Service.
Nanette holds a Master of Science Degree in Management from Cardinal Stritch University and Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh. She is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy as well as the FBI's National Executive Institute. She is also a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command. On May 15, 2004, Marian College of Fond du Lac bestowed a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) degree to her.
As Chief, Nanette Hegerty has made it her personal goal, and the mission of the Milwaukee Police Department, to provide efficient and effective police service to the City of Milwaukee. In the tradition of community policing, Chief Hegerty seeks to work with Department members and citizens to improve neighborhoods by reducing crime and maintaining a safe environment.
