enough reading - time to write

We had our big family cruise to Alaska last week and the overwhelming feeling I am left with is gratitude. My mom has navigated safely to the age of 75 and taken us all along for the ride. Many times I never thought we would get this far. The glaciers, while diminished in size and strength, are still majestic and alive and beautiful.

Rain was predicted for almost the entire week, but only a short drizzle ever hit and that was at sea when we were inside anyway. We still swayed for a couple of days back at home. Adjusting to home life has been made easier by hightailing it to the laundry room and sink while the enthusiasm for coming back home is still there and not letting the post-vacation slump hit right in the middle of a mountain of unpacked suitcases. Good thing, because we all managed to catch cold, so I've sidestepped a double whammy of lazing around succombing to the slow advance of chaos. *** Had to take a break there and look up some Lego sets online for R as a bonus for cleaning up the breakfast nook today. I got on him partly because it had been way too long and partly because of school coming up, and he had to get the big talk about responsibility and respect a few times, with commiseration thrown in for how I'm still working pretty hard on this stuff, too.

The school waiting list that had him at #28 at the start of summer has somehow evaporated. He'd jumped to #2 when I called the info line before our trip and I fretted a few times about what would happen if he moved up and they called while we were gone and we lost his spot. They ended up calling at dinnertime the day after we got home to offer us the spot and I said yes. The funny thing is that right afterward, his neighbor friend L (starting kindergarten in the reference school) came over all sweet and funny to invite him to play, and in the mail today we got a letter from his would-be teacher at said reference school and the guy sounds like a ball of fire. Second guessing is second nature to me, though, so it's okay, I'm still excited about VR. You know what the really crazy thing is, though? Of four houses next door and across the street from each other, the kids are going to four different schools. This system is so bloated and out of hand, I mean really. Too much choice is as good as none, sometimes. Orientation is tomorrow so we'll see how that goes. And let's not forget that the whole system is being revamped for the coming year AND we might be moving out of the cluster anyway. Moot! But not moot just yet.

I think my flickr is pretty well updated; will post Alaska pictures in a minute. Good to be here.
