Yup. The "R" word has been passed around recently in a lot of feedback I've seen around the web. There's only so much you can do before you really gotta hang it up and learn to live as "the guys who used to be in that band, The Who" (or insert any other band name here that's been going on for 3 to 4 decades...). I have a hard time with that modern day attempt to re-live the old days, but then again, some artists get so strongly type-cast they can't do anything else. Or rather, the public will not let them do it with success.

Then again, the superbowl demographic probably mostly caters to young adults up to old armchair fans - and the people who liked The Who hate that kiddie pop shit that gets to have the other superbowl halftimes over the years. I suppose there's no easy middle ground. Except for the Superbowl to change their formula for halftime to simply be generic enough that anyone will understand or tolerate it.

I dunno. Having not been a big fan of sports most of my life, I can now see the loathing with which 'professional sports' owned by corporations for commercialized profit are really just a big money masturbation going on, much like "radio friendly pop" is to the music biz.

That being said, give me undiscovered, unproduced local music and roller derby and you peg the opposite end of the spectrum without being all hipstery and gimmicky to compensate.
