Going to the haunted house seemed like a great idea at first. at least that’s what Sam initially thought before Jongdae came into the picture. technically speaking, she should have been happy. but the thing about crushes is that there’s always a catch. And for sam, the catch was linda.
"Jongdae," Linda called, giggling as she tugged Sam along by the wrist. "Hurry up, we're going in." Jongdae looked up from his pockets with a smile that nearly broke Sam. Not because he had a bad smile, dear God no, but because it was one of those smiles directed at Linda and only Linda. Sam felt that familiar turn in her stomach, she was used to this by now.
Seeing her best friend and her crush like this. She felt torn between jealousy and happiness. And she didn't understand why she still put herself in these situations. But she was here now. She put on a smile, the prefectly practiced smile of an almost broken heart and joined them both by the door of the haunted house, hoping that the darkness of the place would help her hide her true feelings, since it was getting harder by the day.
Sam was glad it was dark. To be honest, she found it a comfort so she couldn’t see the exchange going on between Linda and Jongdae in front of her. linda screaming first hand at the creepy noises and Jongdae wrapping an arm around her shoulder with a chuckle. sam shrank back in her jacket, wishing she could disappear, shrieking when long fingers clamp down on her wrist. she stumbles into jongdae’s back, reaching out to grab for anything to her support her up.
Her hand closes around fingers, then a warm palm that envelopes hers on reflex. For a split second, Sam just lets it happens because it feels so damn natural. Of course, that's before she glances up. "Hey, are you okay?" The stranger's voice is soft and low, slightly muffled behind the scarf he has wrapped around his neck. It's too dark for her to make out anything more, and she silently hopes he can't see the pink that probably tints her cheeks.
She's holding the hand of a total stranger. She's starting to freak out and tries to let go of the hand. But the hand feels strong and safe and there's another body by her side. She screams and clutches onto his arm. She would be amazed by the muscles if it weren't for the fact that her mind and heart are a total mess. Why did she agree to come here? The stranger presses her hand softly... "It's ok. I'll protect a damsel in distress".The cheesy comment is enough to shock her and make her focus on the guy.
Sam attempts to sneak a peek towards his direction, but the room is impossibly dark and there’s a single light ahead of her, a rotten skull with piercing red eyes. Against her will, she screams again, tightening her hold on the boy’s hand. She feels him shift his fingers so they lace together with hers, strong and confident as he leads her around the corner. “don’t be scared.” he says soothingly. “I’ve got you.”
"I-" her breath catches in her throat as she spots the bright glow of sunlight spilling through the exit down the hall. She bites her lip, eyes slightly closed as the stranger leads her out, his side pressing reassuringly against hers. "We're almost there," he murmurs softly, "A couple more feet, okay?" Her surroundings brighten eventually, and she can feel the January wind brushing her skin. She doesn't dare open her eyes.
She abruptly lets go of his hand, murmurs a low "thanks" and rushes to Linda and Jongdae. The blush on her cheeks is too obvious when they see her face. "What happened? We lost you back there." She mumbles something about a mistake, a guy and being too scared. That's when Jongdae looks back to the house and meets eyes with another guy, with an amusing smile. It dawns on him. So, of course, he smirks and grabs Sam's hand to take her to the guy.
“Jongdae, what are you-“ Sam frantically attempts to dig her boots in the snow, looking up at the stranger who had given her so much comfort and meeting his eyes for the first time. The guy’s cheeks tinted pink from the cold, nose buried in his scarf, and Sam almost gasps when he reaches up to pull his scarf down to smile. “Hi.”
Jongdae cracks a smile as soon as he notices it. "Hi!" he brightly greets the guy. "I think you've already met my friend." The cute guy chuckles at that. "as a matter of fact, i have. She needed a little help back there". "I did not!" Sam snaps. Back to being herself, she starts to argue. "I was a tiny bit scared, that's true. But i could have done well by myself. Although, i appreciate" -she clearly ennunciates-" your help. I could have gone alone." She huffs as she tries to pretend that nothing big had happened inside the haunted house.
“You were screaming.” the boy points out, and Sam gapes at him in disbelief. “Clearly, you needed some guidance.” Jongdae snickers at the side. “I like this boy.” “Does said boy have a name?” Linda asks, arching an eyebrow. The boy grins, and Sam feels like punching him in the gut and kissing him at the same time. “Joonmyun. Kim Joonmyun.”

Sam silently curses Linda and Jongdae, not before shooting glares their way. Strangely enough, as Jongdae grins back at her she feels nothing but annoyance for her friend. "And does this damsel in distress have a name?" Joonmyun's soft voice breaks through her thoughts and suddenly she's red again. "I'm not a damsel in distress," Sam asserts, but to her dismay, her voice wavers. "It's Sam." Joonmyun smiles and she's numb. "Sam," he muses, making the name she hated roll off of his tongue like honey.
“it must be short for something.” Joonmyun says. “Samantha?” If Sam had been a tomato before, now she’s flushed a deep blood red. There’s something about the way Joonmyun says her name, gentle and delicate, with an underlying tone of, Sam dares to hope, affection. “How did you know?” she asks breathlessly, whipping around to look for Jongdae and Linda to rescue her, but to her horror her friends have vanished.
'Those fuckers,' she seethes. Her eyes dart around in a moment of panic while Joonmyun's gaze is steady on her, bringing Sam back to earth just as quick as she left. "Sam's too short of a name to capture your beauty." Sam nearly chokes at his comment, because surely he has to be messing with her. But the little smile that plays on his lips is so sincere, she can't make him take it back.
