One more hand on the wheel, please

Hooray for random entries full of nonsequitor tangents...

Driving to the office the other day, I saw a woman in the driver's seat of her vehicle, one hand holding a cell phone to her ear, one hand doing her makeup.  Yes, we were driving highway speeds.

I'm experiencing some frustration with our wedding photographer who seems to periodically go AWOL.  We still have not received our proofbook, and the album deadline "for the holidays" is October 1.  I finally got her moving on the album layout a month ago, sent her the corrections two weeks ago, and have heard nothing.  We have to give final approval before the book goes to print, and tomorrow is October 1st.  Yes, in two weeks, she will have taken the pictures a full year ago.  My advice to those of you not yet married:  get in writing a guarantee of when you'll have your album in hand or you get your photography for free.  /grrr/

Went apple-picking today, came home, and made two apply things, improvising on both recipes.  The first was an apple crisp with dried cherries.  The second was apple-chocolate chip muffins which were created from a recipe for a cake (but the cake pan was full of apple crisp...).

The new Doctor Who series maintains way more continuity between episodes than I remember the old one doing.  And, aside from sheer lameness in the first few episodes, the rest of the ninth doctor, and now, this season, the tenth doctor, seems to be quite good.

We changed from Comcast to Verizon FiOS for our cable and internet last week.  Although I had some interesting-bad dealings with Verizon the day before and then the day of our change, canceling our Comcast service seems to be the easiest thing ever.  The guy I talked to didn't even try to talk me out of it, and was extremely efficient and proactive in terms of canceling our automatic payment and crediting us for the three weeks in the billing cycle we didn't use.  (I was ready to pay the whole month.)

Having FiOS now means we get a bunch more cable stations, which means that a week later, we're now WAY behind on all our TiVo viewing with the addition of National Geographic Channel and BBC America to our lineup.

Got a massage on Friday, after thinking for a couple months that I ought to go but being convinced on Thursday morning while out for the morning pull/walk with the dog.  My shoulder had been bothering me, so I mentioned it to Gordon when he asked how I was doing.  Holy crap. I knew my shoulder kind of hurt.  I hadn't realized exactly the extent of the tight muscles.  At one point, when I had to say something (because, in pain, I was either going to laugh or cry so needed to make some noise), I said, "Did a good job, didn't I?" at which point he responded with something that I swear was about an "erector set" (which made me nearly laugh outloud), but I'm pretty sure he probably said something about erector spinae.  Anyway, the massage was great, but left me a space cadet for the rest of the day, even worse than usual to the point where Glen called and asked where I was because the house looked like it had been vacated "in a rush".  Whoops.

Took the dog to a farmer's market on Tuesday.  It was pretty cool, and I hope we'll be able to go again this week.  Bought a pint of cherry tomatoes.  Have harvested a single tomato from my garden, although two more are on their way.  Used three eggplant from my garden in a big pasta thing I made last night.  It's the same pasta thing I have made for a couple years now and love - a recipe from Jamie Oliver for pasta with sweet tomato sauce and baked ricotta - that kind of turns out like open-faced lasagne but makes a staggering quantity.  This time, it made enough for twelve servings.

Taught karate on Saturday morning.  Found out that one of the 5 year olds strongly prefers me to Allan in teaching.  Apparently the kid wouldn't go onto the dojo floor at all with Allan last week, and cried in the doorway the whole time instead.  Both the kid and his father were relieved to see me yesterday!  Also found out from a mother of a kid I sometimes teach that her son always looks for my car when they pull into the parking lot.  He told her that he likes my classes because Allan's "are work" while mine are "fun.  And work."  Taught more hours of karate in September than in all of June, July, and August combined.
