LUDLOW - A 10-year-old Springfield boy died Monday when he veered off a trail at Okemo Mountain Resort during a school-sponsored trip.
Trevor Suong of Springfield died after he went off the Rimrock trail Monday afternoon and struck a snowmaking machine while skiing with his classmates from Park Street School, according to the Ludlow Police Department.
He suffered blunt trauma to the head, chest and stomach and died shortly after being airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H, police said.
Police said the boy was not wearing a helmet.
The trail was well groomed, visibility was clear and the conditions were good on the mountain Monday, said Ludlow Police Chief Jeff Billings. While the investigation is ongoing, he said there appears to be no wrongdoing on the part of Okemo.
"This was a ski error," Billings said. "It was a tragic accident."
Suong was with two Park Street School classmates and an Okemo-trained chaperone when the accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m., according to Pam Cruickshank, director of public relations for Okemo.
The Rimrock trail runs 5,550 feet near the top of the mountain down to Glades Peak Quad, according to information on Okemo's Web site. The trail is labeled for intermediate skiers and Suong had the necessary experience to handle the trail, Cruickshank said.
Suong was the last of the three students to ski down the trail that afternoon, she said. When he didn't arrive at the bottom, the chaperone went back up and found him off of the main trail.
This is the first time a student was hurt or killed at Okemo during a school program or trip, Cruickshank said.
"Any loss of life is tragic, but the passing of a youngster is especially devastating," she said. "The whole Okemo staff is mourning the loss."
Suong, a fifth-grader at Park Street School, had never gone skiing before signing up for the program run by the Springfield School District, according to his aunt, Susan Boyer. She described him as a novice, but said he was very excited about the sport.
"He described himself as the strongest skier of the group," she said Tuesday.
The 10-year-old also had a strong love for animals. His family has a dog, a cat, a duck fish and three rabbits, Boyer said.
Suong was also fascinated by trains, she said, and would frequently ride the train between Rutland and Bellows Falls with his father.
His favorite computer games typically involved large pieces of equipment such as trains, tractors and trucks, she added.
He also recently enrolled in the chorus at school and the program quickly became one he looked forward to, Boyer said.
"He had a wonderful smile," she said.
Suong was part of a school program that teaches skiing to fifth- and sixth-graders in the Springfield school district, according to Superintendent Rose Ruth. The district has had a contract with Okemo to use trails and provide training for chaperons for many years, she said.
Monday's tragedy will not mark the end of the skiing program, Ruth said. The program is part of a well-rounded educational curriculum in the district, she said.
"As far as we can see, this was an accident," she said. "We have a lot of faith in the skiing program."
Counselors were at Springfield elementary schools Tuesday to provide assistance to students who were grieving. Suong's fifth-grade classmates covered a wall with pictures and memories of him.
"We're devastated about this," Ruth said. "Everyone in the schools are mourning the loss of this very, very nice boy."
