If you want the big screen experience with that budget, you will have to go with the old tried and true CRT projection. They are big and bulky but they still give one of the best pictures. The only real down side besides the big and bulky part is room lighting. If this TV is going in a living room with a big window, watching TV with the blinds/drapes open will wash out the picture. You have to have the optimum viewing angle and room lighting to have the best viewing experience with these sets.

LOL we've been looking online and at sears so far, but that's it.

Budget? I have no clue. I personally don't see spending more than a grand.

I'd look at CRT projections in the 45-55" range=) Toshiba has a nice 46" table top model that usually goes for 800-900 on sale. Save money by building your own stand instead of paying the 200 for theirs. They also have a 51" that is a floor stander which doesn't need a stand for around 1200.

Building our own stand... yeah right. Not gonna happen. Too much going on :)

I don't want anything that big. Rob said 30" min for a reason... I'm thinking not bigger than 40" PLUS I'm not about to let the TV be the main focus of our living room when we have a fantastic huge Thomas Kinkade we bought last year together over our fireplace.

ahh I see. I think a 30-34" HD widescreen tube from Sony or Toshiba would be a better bet then. The nice thing about these smaller tubes is that if you don't get HD right away through cable or satellite, you won't be that bad off because analog stations will still look okay. This isn't the case on the bigger sets. Feed it a shitty signal, get a shitty picture. Crap in, crap out.

That's what I was trying to tell Rob. All of our cable isn't HD yet.

Do you have digital cable? If you do, a HD digital cable box won't cost you anymore to rent than a digital cable box. The nice thing about getting HD through cable is you get all your locals in HD. If you go with satellite you not only have to buy the HD equipment instead of rent it, you also have to put an antenna on the roof to get your local stations because as of yet DirecTV does not pass locals in HD.

Even if you don't get HD right away, DVDs will look great especially if you use a progressive scan DVD player.

We do have digital cable in the main room. We just cancelled our satellite.

Cool. Buy a widescreen HD tube, exchange your digital box for an HD box, and watch football, CSI, Law and Order, etc. in HD. =D
