It Reminds Me of Saying Goodbye to Childhood

If you grew up in Birmingham, the X was as much a part of your life as high school football and walking the Summit. It was the first place that you heard Alanis Morsette's "You Oughta Know", the only station playing Jewel's "You Were Meant for Me" and the first place that played John Mayer (and who could forget that extra-sexy version of "Your Body is a Wonderland" on Live in the X-Lounge). The X was the only radio station that could make you stand outside in the cold during the Christmas season for a CD. The X introduced you to Matchbox 20 and Michael Tolcher. Every concert worth attending was sponsored by the X, and Beaner and Ken's Birthday Bash was as exciting of a high school event as prom.
Now, in college... we were torn. There was still the X, but then the Z came. And the Z was the X feom six years before. And Beaner and Ken were back and they were mocking Luca again and the station was playing awesome new stuff like Graham Colton Band and Will Hoge. And they were still playing the stuff that made up your high school soundtrack. But, as things would have it, the X bought the Z and then moved to the Z's frequency (I will never understand radio). So, in some ways, it was the best of both worlds... even though it wasn't quite as good as the Z or the X six years ago.
But today, we have lost the X in all forms. It is a sports station. And that seems to mean that there is no good outlet for alternative in Birmingham anymore. So please, bow your heads and think of the good times (such as when you could buy Maroon 5 for 1.07 or when the X did free concerts) and hope that someone comes in to fill the very large shoes that the X has left.

Measure your life in love.
