So I just saw it again, on my own with the full popcorn treatment, and I liked it way better. I guess having seen it before meant that I was watching it more with an eye towards its own merits, rather than just waiting to see how close it would be to the books.
First new thought: Billy Crudup's performance is just insane. It's hard to say whether it captures the comic book--it certainly wasn't how I thought of the character sounding and behaving, but who am I? What it is is a credible portrayal of a guy who is by equal degrees absolutely fascinated by everything because he can see all of its inner workings down to the quasar, and slightly bored by everything because he always knows what's going to happen. It hadn't quite crystallized in my mind that he's a character who knows what he's going to feel, but still finds himself feeling it.
Second new thought: Carla Gugino is also great. One of my friends hated her, and I think that comes fromt he fact that for part of the movie, she's giving the performance of an old-fashioned movie star, which then falls away at the end when her daughter reveals that she knows the truth.
Third new thought: Veidt's would-be assassin killed Iacocca! I hadn't realized. Kudos to that guy, I guess.
