平沢進 - "VENUS" / Hirasawa Susumu - "Venus" Lyrics

Apr 26, 2011 19:24

Since I keep talking about it, I thought I'd post this song, too. This is my ultimate favorite in the "Weird Sort-of Love Songs...IN SPACE!" category. I mean, just listen to that glorious guitar. And those beautiful, gentle vocals. And the lyrics. The lyrics, man. As always, I can't do them justice.

Hirasawa Susumu - "Venus"

Asa ga kuru mae ni kieta hoshi made no chizu o kimi e no uta ni kae
Chie no hate no tami ni azuketa
Fune yo isoge yo nishi wa mada mukyuu no sanaka
Nemuri kara miharaseba uchuu wa kimi o yumemite

Bokura no aida ni kawaranai mono o kazoe
Yakusoku ni kurami ikutsu mo no hashi o watatta
Ano hi kara kieta hoshi ga ima kawaomo ni utsuru
Mizukasa yo mase afure kimi e to boku o uzumete

Hirasawa Susumu - "Venus"

Before morning came, I turned the map to the vanished stars* into a song for you
And entrusted it to the people** at the ends of the earth
Hurry, oh ship! The west still lies in the middle of eternity***
Looking out from my sleep, I see that the cosmos is dreaming of you

I counted the things between us that won't change
And driven by our promise, I crossed countless bridges
The stars that vanished that day are now reflected on the river's surface
Oh water, rise up and spill over! Submerge me and bring me towards you.

Someday, let's look up into the sunlight and, on the day when the vanished stars reappear,
Let's sing that map-song that I entrusted to the people at the ends of the earth
Sing "Because I am you!"  Sing "Because I am you!"

Before morning came, I turned the map to the vanished stars into a song for you
And entrusted it to the people at the ends of the earth
Hurry, oh ship! The west still lies in the middle of eternity
Looking out from my sleep, I see that the cosmos is dreaming of you

Translation Notes:* Could be "star" or "stars," as the Japanese is ambiguous about number. And since the same word can be used to designate planets at times, it may be "planet(s)" instead.

** "People" in the sense of "people of this country."

*** Since the sun sets in the west, this could be a poetic way of saying the west is still in the dark of night, even though the hints of dawn are coming in the east. But feel free to look for connections to songs like "The Westward of Time," which also has a ship hurrying westwards.

- While reading about alchemy for translating songs from Philosopher's Propeller, I came across this page, which has some interesting notes on how Venus (the morning star and the goddess Aphrodite) is associated with water and the ocean. It says that "[a]s Aphrodite is born from the sea, she is the guide through the fearful world of the unconscious," which seems to fit this song very well.
