KING" / Hirasawa Susumu - "Gardener King" Lyrics

Mar 31, 2011 12:36

This song is one of my favorites, but I really struggle with translating it.

One thing that gets lost in translation is the way each verse is set up to count "1,2,3,4" / "一、二、三、四" with the first character of each line, but there's no good way to preserve that effect.

I also think there is a play on words between "King" and "working" but that might just be me. ;)

King
King

King
King

King

King
King

King

Hirasawa Susumu - "Niwashi King"

Hataraku yo KING
Hito no niwa ni subete tariru made

Hitoyo no tetsuya de kono yo no hoshi o shiri
Nidome no yoake de hi no uta o kiku
Sangai no nohara de subete no chichi to nari
Shihon no hashira de sora o sasaeru

Yasumazu ni KING
Hataraku yo KING
Hito no niwa ni subete tariru made

Tan to fuke kaze yo dantotsu ni soukai ni
Panpan ni shatsu o ho no you ni harase
Tan to fuku kaze yo Jintai no sora ni
Hatarake niwashi yasumazu KING

Hataraku yo KING
Hito no niwa ni subete tariru made

Tan to fuke kaze yo dantotsu ni soukai ni
Panpan ni shatsu o ho no you ni harase
Tan to fuku kaze yo Jintai no sora ni
Hatarake niwashi yasumazu KING

Hirasawa Susumu - "Gardener King"

The first sweep resounds in the source of the rain
And with the second sweep, I learn the rage of the sea
With three bountiful blessings, I find lodging in this world
And fence in the four directions with the help of magic

Without rest  King
I work  King
Until there is enough of everything in everyone's garden

After one sleepless night's study, I know the stars of this world
And at the second dawn, I listen to the song of the sun
In the fields of the past, present, and future, I become the father of all things
And with four pillars I prop up the sky

Without rest  King
I work  King
Until there is enough of everything in everyone's garden

Blow greatly, oh Wind most refreshing
Fill my shirt until it billows tightly like a sail
Blow greatly, oh Wind, through the vast sky* of the human body
Work, Gardener  Without rest, King

I adorn myself with the pride of a single ear of rice
And with a two-character word,** I carry out an act of piety
As I walk, I discover my own name at my third step
And I let you repose on the throne of the fourth step

Without rest  King
I work  King
Until there is enough of everything in everyone's garden

Blow greatly, oh Wind most refreshing
Fill my shirt until it billows tightly like a sail
Blow greatly, oh Wind, through the vast sky of the human body
Work, Gardener  Without rest, King

*The word "sky" is written as 宇宙 or "outer space/cosmos" but sung as そら or "sky."

** The "two-character word" may be 南無 (namu), a Buddhist term that comes from the Sanksrit namas or namo. It means something like "I believe" or "Amen."

(Special thanks to a certain Chinese fan who pointed out 南無 to me! ^_^ ) This entry was originally posted at http://phonon-belt.dreamwidth.org/1552.html.
