I just got back from this "Warehouse Closeout" sale a few blocks away from where I live. Once again I realize my father's ignorance when it comes to buying things, and I realized how it's actually beneficial to me.
The salesman type guy there was trying to sell my dad everything in the world. Serious satilite radios, laptops, boomboxes, bluetooth headsets, were all given their time under the spotlight of this salesman. He's good, no doubt he had delt with many quick compulsive buyers in the past but I knew how to deal with him. Slow it down.
In the age of plastic, people swipe their cards rather than pay attention to how much they're spending. I'm not a penny pincher by any means, but I do know the difference between being an educated buyer and a chump. I watched in awe today as my dad nearly bought a non-returnable (because the business was going out-of-business) bluetooth headset for 50 dollars, salesman never mentioning that he needed a bluetooth phone for the headset to work, till I stepped in.
Too many times in the past have I witnessed my dad become the target of salesmen. My dad is a definate great salesman by trade, but because he's a good salesman, apparently he can fall into the exact same traps that he uses. I think that to be a good salesman, you also have to be a chump yourself. This salesman was no differet, one after one I debunked vague ideas the guy gave my dad.
I like to slow down the salesman. That fast speech doesn't float with me. I'll walk away if they don't stop. You may know things about the product, but I have questions and I don't feel like being interrupted. More often than not, a salesman that doesn't even look up at me can get more business than one that pesters me to death (hence why most of everything I buy is online). If it comes to the point of where my instincts flair up that there might be something shady in this deal, I'll take my business elsewhere.
I curbed my dad's spending frenzy to $377 from the intial $800 he was going to spend. One laptop (for my dad), one serious radio (for trav), and one bluetooth with phone adapter (for my dad again). The laptop wasn't a good deal, he spent 50$ more than he would of anywhere else, but I couldn't argue with him anymore. "Son could you pay for this?" lol, that was the best part.
