The Gentle Queen slowly crept through the room, focusing intently on a shadow moving underneath her bed. The only light in the room came from the blood red candles standing on her night table and on the windowsill. But her eyes were sharp and the candles provided her with just enough light to accomplish the task set before her.
A terrible task. To take the life of another. To murder another.
She was the Gentle Queen of Narnia and while death was something she normally detested and avoided, there were some cases that called for desperate measures. Desperate times and all that. No reasoning or talking could solve this. This was such a case, where she enjoyed the hunt and even more so, the kill.
She crouched down closer to her bed on her tiptoes and quietly slid a chair out of her way. He hadn’t spotted her yet. She still had the element of surprise. She would prevail. For Narnia! Victory would be hers. She would triumph.
But, let’s not get ahead of yourself here, she thought, this isn’t going to be easy. When she mover even closer to the shadow, she knew the exact moment she had been discovered by her prey. His eyes widened in fear.
She could see in the black depths of his eyes his desire to run and scream for help. It was no use now. Her arrow was ready to strike and pierce his body. Looking at the slightly maniacal smile on her face and the dark glint in her eyes, he knew he didn’t stand a chance. He was as good as dead.
And she knew it too.
Fast as lightning she let go of her arrow. The sound of its release broke the silence. Zzzff. Bullseye. The arrow pierced his hart and blood sprayed out, staining the carpet.
She moved closer to her bed and inspected the dead body laying on the floor. She knew she should be feeling guilty right now, but it wouldn’t come. Instead, she felt oddly calm and peaceful inside. Mission accomplished.
Suddenly, the door to her room opened. Susan spun around quickly, her hair whipping around her face. When she saw who it was, she hung her head in shame. No use in hiding the evidence now.
"Susan?"
A pause.
"Yes?"
"What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
A sigh.
“Will you stop wasting your damn arrows on spiders? I may be King of Narnia and you may be my Queen, but I can’t just pull an endless supply of arrows out of my - ”
“Sorry.” Susan smiled sheepishly.
Caspian smiled as well. He couldn’t resist her. Not when she looked at him that. “I forgive you my Queen. Now let’s get some sleep.”
The two of them climbed into bed together. Caspian kissed the top of her head and pulled her closer.
“Nice shot.”
“Thank you.”
