So, I think I made it through my Syntax and Morphology exam okay. I've no idea what to expect in terms of grades, though.
And I've fallen completely in love with Heroes. Shiny new fandom, yay!
The problem is, my OTP in this new fandom appears to be a het 'ship, which brings with it a whole bunch of issues apart from the fact that it's completely wrong and I shouldn't be seeing it. But more on that later.
The issues being that I'm now, once again, forced to face serious questions about gender roles - especially in such a large fandom (and popular 'ship) with a relatively young demographic. And seriously, these are the things that will make me back out of a fic as fast as I can:
- More than one S/G error in the first three paragraphs (if there are any at all in the header, I won't click the link/cut)
- OOC-ness
- Purple prose/ obvious thesaurus abuse / exaggerated use of metaphors / fic that reads like a Linkin Park song
- Gender issues: when the fic annoys my feminist side, be it by squeezing characters into traditional gender roles (when they don't already conform), misogyny etc.
And most of the time it's okay, but I come across it more often that I'd like.
Like in Heroes,
Peter is a nurse. He's a hospice nurse and it fits his character perfectly, even if I imagine he might also have gotten a kick out of his family's reaction when he first told them he wanted to be a nurse. Though a big part of him probably felt guilty for letting them down. He's complicated, isn't he? Anyway, I can just imagine him having arguments with his family because they probably wanted him to be a doctor instead - it's more prestigious. But Peter, he made his choice and chose to be a hospice nurse, and he liked his job - I think he needs to feel needed, important, but this is not actually a meta on Peter so I'll stop now.
My point is, Peter chose to be a nurse (and I love that) but I've seen fics in which he really wanted to be a doctor. I suspect this is because being a doctor is much more manly and prestigious. But here's the thing. There's a difference between being a doctor and being a nurse that doesn't just consist of pay, education and prestige. Being a doctor is stress, it's a hundred faces only seen in passing, tests and diagnoses. Nurses, while still being stressed, have more time to actually get to know their patients. Nurses care for their patients. Doctors hardly ever have the time. Peter is a nurse, not a doctor.
Oh well. It's not that bad, really. And, being in fandom, those writers are likely to come across some feminism at some point. So I just hit the backbutton and don't worry about it.
I just really wanted to talk about the fact that Peter is a nurse. How awesome is that?
Also,
Milo Ventimiglia is a vegetarian. The same kind as me, actually, except I do occasionally eat eggs. And I do love it when I discover another hot male vegetarian. It's nice to know they exist. *grins*
Oh, I could post
pictures of that man all day. He's
beautiful. And look,
eyebrow! I'll stop now.
