In a move which can only be described as mind-bogglingly idiotic, Texas legislator Leo Berman (R-Tyler) has proposed a bill which would allow any privately funded organization to grant legally recognized degrees in any subject it pleases without being accredited by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). Berman insists that it is unfair to require colleges to be legally accredited if they do not rely on state or federal funding; instead, any institution which wants to should be entitled to advertise itself as a university and hand out college degrees.
Berman openly acknowledges that his bill was inspired by the failure of the right-wing fundamentalist "Institute for Creation Research" (ICR) to secure accreditation in 2007, echoing ICR's claims that the Higher Education Coordinating Board had no right to declare that its explicitly anti-scientific platform of religious conspiracy theories should not be considered a legitimate curriculum plan.
I don't think there are words for this level of sheer stupidity.
