I've wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle for a long time but I keep coming up with reasons not too.  Namely the fact that I'm female and I'm afraid of getting shit from men and I can't really afford a motorcycle + gear.  I really want to do it and I think I'm going to try for it.  I've got a helmet and graduation's coming up.  I can put any ( Read more... )

Yo Liz! I usually don't comment on peoples' journals anymore... but if you want to talk about motorcycles, I'm your gal! I got mine last summer and I totally love it. Just to give you a rough estimate, all my stuff (including, bike, insurance, gear, classes to get license, helmet, etc) cost me about $6,000. It is totally worth it though, I must say ( ... )

P.S. When you DO go bike shopping, if you want someone to tag along, I'm so there.

I appreciate any advice I can get! My Dad, brother & various uncles are all big into motorcycles so I have some input. I was actually looking at a smaller bike but my brother said I should go a bit bigger so I can go highway speeds if I need to.

This particular bike is a 2000 Suzuki LS650 Savage. According to this website: http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/suzuki_ls_650_p_savage_2000.php
it's about 352 pounds and about 650 cc's. The weight thing is something I worried about because my Dad's Harley is way too heavy for me!

You should definately come shopping with me whenever I go! My brother and I are going to casually look over spring break next week but I can't afford anything for a while. At least I already have a helmet.

If there's any particular motorcycles you'd suggest, let me know!!

PS- What do you have? I read something about a motorcycle permit that you can practice on...did you do that or did you just do the class? Do you know what you have to do to get the permit?

You have to take a written test at the DMV to get a permit, and the permit was required for the class I took. Apparently not all DMVs do the motorcycle permit thing though... I went to the DMV in Schaumburg to get mine. There's a motorcycle manual on the DMV website you can download and read, and that's what the written test is based on. I took a class from Ride Chicago Motorcycle School after I got my permit and got my license right after (you take a riding test to get the license ( ... )

The Virago looks nice. I like it. I'd seen it mentioned as a good beginner bike but hadn't looked it up yet. 250cc would probably be easier for me to handle. I don't plan on doing any cross country driving. Probably more around town. I've definately got to do some more research on bikes that would work for me.
