5.Bruce/Betty
Bruce was buried in his lab again. Same place he’d been for most of the month. He’d emerged for Christmas when Tony has cut the power to the lab. His reasoning for that had been: “Steve looks like a kicked puppy dog, so if I have to suffer, so do you.” Bruce didn’t see a lot of point in celebrating. The Avengers were a good group of people, but it wasn’t…family. It wasn’t the one person that he truly wanted to be with. She was far beyond his reach now. He sighed, running a hand through his salt and pepper hair and refocusing on the calculations in front of him.
He turned his head slightly as the door hissed open. Tony stood in the doorway with his hands jammed in the pockets of what were undoubtable expensive jeans. Tony never did anything halfway. He ambled into the lab and started looking at samples and data and even went so far as to start correcting Bruce’s equations on the whiteboard. Bruce could feel a headache start behind his eyes just from the other man’s presence. “Tony, leave my stuff alone. It’s my stuff. I don’t go into your workshop and start taking Dummy apart.”
Stark’s head snapped up. “I wish you would. Can you imagine Dummy all juiced up on Gamma? Man, he’d be…unbearable. Everyone would be getting doused by fire extinguishers. Yah, bad idea. Sorry I said anything. Look, you need to come upstairs. It’s almost midnight.”
Bruce rubbed his temples and repeated his breathing mantra in his head. “I’m fine here, Tony. I understand that it’s New Years, but for me, it’s just one more year over. I just want to work. Please, Tony. Just…go.”
Tony was rocking back and forth on his heels. “No can do, Jolly Green Giant. I need five minutes. Just come upstairs. Don’t make me go get a Hulk buster unit, cause we don’t really have time for that. Just come upstairs.” When Tony made no move to leave the lab, Bruce threw his hands up in disgust. Finally he followed the genius billionaire upstairs. The elevator didn’t stop at the normal levels and instead continued up the rooftop terrace. As the doors opened Bruce could see the ball in Times Square in the distance. It had started to drop and the crowd could be heard chanting the countdown.
“New Years’ Eve. It’s a time for new beginnings, Bruce. Time to reflect on what was and what can be. You know, all that goodwill towards men stuff and the like. Anyway. We couldn’t get her away for long, just an hour or so, but something’s better than nothin’ right?” With that, Tony shoved Bruce out onto the terrace and gave a jaunty wave as the doors closed. Confused Bruce stepped further out on the terrace. Movement out of the shadows caught his attention. Stepping into the artificial light was a woman with pale skin and dark black hair. Bruce felt his heart leap at the sight of her. Before he really thought about it, he was in motion, pulling her into his arms and leaning down to slam his lips into hers. She laughed into his mouth, holding on just as tight to him.
“Betty,” he murmured into her mouth, “Betty.”
4. Tony/Pepper
Pleased with his good deed for the year, Tony headed back down to the living quarters of Avengers Tower. The thick walls of the Tower did little to drown out the sounds of jubilation from Times Square. Pouring himself a drink, Tony flipped through channels on the television. They all showed the same damn thing: happy couples kissing as the New Year was rung in. He dug the heels of his hands into his eyes and sighed. His cell phone chimed on the table next to him. Picking it up, he opened the new message.
Happy New Year, Tony. May all your wishes come true this year.-Pepper
Sitting up straighter, Tony read and reread the message over again, looking for some hidden meaning in the two lines of text. He knew he was over analyzing the simple message, but he couldn’t help the small spark of hope that flared in his chest. He’d screwed things up with Pepper before. Now their personal relationship was in tatters and their professional one was conducted largely through phone calls and uncomfortable meetings that Tony attempted to avoid at all costs.
The text message was the first personal communication they’d had in months. Well, Tony was always one to push his luck. Downing his drink in one shot, he headed down to his workshop calling for Jarvis to assemble the Iron Man suit as he jogged down the stairs.
Landing on the roof of Stark Industries in LA, Tony quickly shed the armor back into its handy suitcase form and took the stairs down to Pepper’s office. He glanced at the clock as he entered the executive wing of the building. 11:57 p.m. Alright, he was getting a second chance to celebrate the New Year. The door to the office was halfway closed but doors didn’t hold any real meaning to Tony Stark so he pushed it open and strolled in like he owned the place, which technically, he did.
Pepper turned at his entrance, her hand darting towards the alarm on her desk. She relaxed slightly at his presence, then turned back around to continue to look out the floor to ceiling glass windows across LA. Tony crossed the space between them and stopped a foot from her, waiting for her to give him permission to come closer. The clock in the hall chimed midnight and Pepper turned from the windows to face him.
Tony held his breath as she leaned up and placed a soft kiss on his check.
“Happy New Year, Tony.”
“Happy New Year, Pep.”
It wasn’t a kiss in Times Square, but it was a start. And wasn’t that what New Years was all about?
3.Steve/Peggy
Steve felt the snow crunch under his feet as he walked across the frozen ground. It was nearing midnight and there was really only one person he wanted to spend the New Year with. He had walked this path many times in the months since he’d awakened in the future, and it still caused a sharp pang of grief to race across his skin every time he did.
He stopped in front of the grave, a simple marker with a name and dates on it. It didn’t convey anything about the woman who lay under the ground. He glanced at his watch and as the numbers rolled over to midnight, Steve leaned forward and pressed his lips to the cold stone.
“Happy New Year, Peggy.”
2.Clint/Darcy
This was the last time, Darcy decided, that she was ever leaving the Tower without her taser. She had just wanted to run down the corner liquor store and get a bottle of cheap champagne. Was that really so much to ask? She didn’t think so, but apparently the idiot who decided to hold up the store while she was in it did. Darcy sighed. Spending New Year’s in a hostage situation was not her definition of fun.
The criminal was on the phone with the police demanding money and a helicopter and Jesus Christ, did this guy do nothing but watch Bruce Willis movies? Well, at least she’d get some booze out of the whole thing. She reached into the cooler behind her and opened a beer. If she was gonna be a hostage, she wasn’t gonna be a sober one. She handed one over to the store owner, who seemed less pleased to be served his own alcohol.
The gunman was waving his weapon around and he turned to face the store front window when the backdoor to the store flew open and two black clad figures stormed in. Before the robber could get a shot off he was entangled in one of Black Widow’s nets and had a shock arrow sticking out of his shoulder. He went down without a sound.
Hawkeye and Widow handed the man over to the local authorities. As they were briefing the police and Coulson was attempting to brief Darcy, midnight struck. She held up her hand to cut off Coulson, stepped around him, took a swig from a bottle of open champagne and tapped Clint on the shoulder. He turned around and before she could lose what little courage the alcohol could give her, she grabbed him by the front of his uniform and dragged him down to her level for a kiss. He made a sound of surprise in the back of his throat. As Darcy pulled away, Clint seemed to wrap his mind around the whole thing and buried his hands in her hair, kissing her until she couldn’t breathe.
Well, maybe this wasn’t such a bad New Year after all.
1. 1.Thor/Jane
Thor managed to drag Jane from her lab a full hour before midnight. This was his first New Year on Midgard and he wanted to celebrate the holiday with Jane. Holding Mjolnir, he lifted them into the air and flew away from the sounds and lights of the city. Landing in the countryside of upstate New York, Thor set Jane back on the ground and let her catch her breath. Here, the stars showed bright above them. Jane smiled up at the night sky and twirled her arms as she spun in a circle, laughing. Thor grinned. When Jane was happy, so was he. Thor wrapped his lady in the warm strength of his arms and kissed her. This New Year, it seemed would be full of promise.
+1. Natasha/Loki
Natasha sighed and entered the lobby of the hotel in Manhattan. After rescuing Darcy, she’d returned to the Tower, changed and took a cab over . Looking at her watch she frowned. It was close to one in the morning. She was late. Using the key card, she entered the special elevator that would take her to the opulent penthouse suite. Her heels clicked as the strolled into the living room and not seeing her date, headed for the bedroom. Also empty. A flash of green caught her eye and she found him on the balcony looking out over the city. Without a word, he handed her a flute of champagne. Taking a sip, Natasha allowed herself to enjoy the taste of the alcohol on her tongue. “Darcy got herself held hostage.”
Loki snorted into his own glass. “Miss Lewis is forever finding herself in tricky situations. Perhaps you should attach some sort of bell to her?” Natasha’s lips twitched in a small smile. “That’s not a bad idea. Though I think Clint is going to be keeping much closer track of her from now on.” Loki cocked on eyebrow at that tidbit of information and Natasha cursed silently. Despite what they did together in this room, outside of it Loki was still an enemy of the Avengers. She couldn’t allow information that could harm the team to come out of her mouth. Sensing her barriers coming up, Loki took both of their glasses and set them on the balcony railing.
Stepping directly into her personal space, he drew her body flush with his and ran his tongue up her neck and around the shell of her ear. Her breath caught as he danced kisses across her face before settling in on her lips. Morning would come soon enough and with it, the responsibilities of being the Black Widow. Now, just for a few hours on the New Year, Natasha let herself be lead inside the bedroom.
