:-(

Last night after a long day of running around with my mom I finally got the chance to sit down in my family room and kick back..

not 10 minutes after doing so, mom looks at me and says "Birdy is falling on her face.. she has no balance anymore"

sure enough I looked in the cage and there she was wings unfurled trying to find her balance.

she managed to stumble into a corner of her cage where I was able to pick her up and see what, if anything, was wrong.

she was having seizures and was obviously blind. This seems to be a common occurance in Parakeets when they have reached a certain age, it happened to our last one as well.

thankfully, we caught her fairly early on and we were able to put her out of her suffering as quickly as possible, but I have never personally had to do it until last night.

we found her at around 10 pm and there are no emergency vets around and she wasn't going to make it until this afternoon (I had a commitment to a volunteer charity bike ride that started at 6am and i JUST got home now, at 7pm).

While I held onto her and kept her warm and tried to prevent her from doing any more damage while she continued to have rolling seizures, mom found a way to put her down as quickly and humanly as possible.

Birdy was the first purchase I made from my first "real" job almost 9 years ago now. She was my buddy all through university and despite my boyfriend being "annoyed" by her squawking in the morning he was also very fond of her.

I said my final goodbye to birdy last night at 10:15pm.

RIP birdy. :(

sad, bird, :(
