tonight brian and I were walking around campus on a photo crawl. Sada was being a jackass though with his lens as always, so I was getting frustrated..and we decided to walk the Chimes to see what there was to see.
when we got to the entrance to school, there came the sound of drumming from somewhere down the street, and i cried to brian that we should go find the source of the sound (because where there is music i will always follow); taking our cameras, we headed down the walk, and suddenly we both faced a dingy bar with fenced windows and this green Olde English type sign, and Brian mentioned that he liked the sign.
It occurred to us both pretty much at the same time that that bar was the source of the music, so we rushed across the street and leaned against the wall nodding until a dingy black guy walked up and asked if we were both underage, and i told him yep, we were just there to listen.
now we're expecting to hear "get away you're loitering"-- but what we hear instead is "it's five bucks."
I gaped.
"Per person?" (because I always must have clarification)
the guy nodded. "yep."
I just so happened to have exactly ten dollars in my wallet, which I had intended to blow on chocolate-- except I wound up irritably leaving the mini mart emptyhanded because everything cost too damned much.
brian and I exchanged glances, and for a few minutes we had that "do you want to?" "do you think we should?" "do YOU think we should?" conversation that inexperienced (or in my case, overly cautious) people often have at moments of spontaneity, and I shrieked/squealed, "I HAVE TEN DOLLARS."
we went in. i paid, we got our hardcore marks (i'm still staring at mine) and we sat down in front because when there is a band I never EVER let myself be too far from them. they were all drunk already, and for a while they just did some smooth jamming that had me almost falling out of my chair from a combination of loving the music and feeling for the first time in so fucking long the rush i get from being right there in front of people playing music....
the bassist was a wild-haired guy in plaid with black gauges and good rhythm, and their guitarist was this tiny kid in a black hoodie whose chord changes made me full-out scream at brian "DID YOU HEAR THAT?" . Eventually they switched instruments; guitarist went to drums, drummer to guitar/mic.
..and at one point they decided to play a Jeff Buckley cover which...made me shaky, but it wasn't So Real so I didn't die. The guy had a great range but he was so drunk he couldn't really control it.
after they had finished a blonde guy I had been eyeing for a while went up and borrowed the bassist's guitar, proceeding to give us three or four drunken-growling versions of a few songs (among them Pearl Jam's "Black", which he congratulated me on knowing the words to after he'd finished) and then he did a Bright Eyes cover (when he mentioned that I flinched, and he saw it and pointed at me and said "Yeah, you've got the right idea, but I promise you this is better.")
after that he and the drummer did a song together, and I filmed them till Sada died (he was behaving by then).
Then Brian decide the smoke was bothering his lungs too much so we had to go, and I stood outside afterward and faced him and said "Clearly there was a reason I couldn't find anything to spend my ten dollars on."
that is a very shitty recap of the night but I'm smoky and reliving it in my head right now, so it's the best I can do.
Happy motherfucking first of October, indeed.
