Desktop Icon...how do I get rid of it?

Hi,
I have just downloaded Phoenix for Mac OS X version 1.9.6. It is a great program, runs great etc, however, I have a question that you might be able to help me out with. I am new to the Mac OS, (a thankful converted Windows user), and I notice every time I download a program, the app. Shows up as a white Hard-drive/external drive looking icon. Is there any way to get that off my desktop? I’ve tried dragging it into the applications folder, but that just makes a duplicate and the original stays on my desktop. Also, is there any way to also move/get rid of the phoenix196.dmg ? What is it anyway.

If you could help my with this problem I would be SOOOOOO thankful, as I have tried to download other freeware/software, and I notice the same thing happen; the white external-drive looking icon appears, and It seems as though Mac recognizes it as a disk drive? Because when you move it to the trash it says “eject” as If I was ejecting a junk drive, or other external hard drive.

There must be a way around this, or people’s desktops would be cluttered messes of these white hard-drive looking things!

If you could explain this, or direct me to a page that could explain this and the solution, I would be so grateful. It has been bugging me for a while.

thanks for any help you can offer!,
Carrie
