November dark and blue frosting

Christmas wants to come sliding in so fast. One radio station started playing holiday tunes by last Thursday. Nov. 12 just seems a tad too early for my tastes.  I've taken down almost all of the Halloween stuff, but a few drips and drabs remain. I was thinking perhaps we could get an inflatable turkey to take up the slack between Halloween and Christmas decorations, but it would be another thing to haul around and store. I guess we can just let November be a tetchy in-between time of dark and wet leaves. As it should be.

We celebrated Bri's ninth birthday this past weekend with a friend party. It's so much work cleaning up the house, and getting ready, but both of her siblings had some themed home parties, so I felt honor-bound to give the third child the same experience. It was a minecraft-themed do, and I made decorations of several of the blocky characters to hang around, and did a scavenger hunt around the yard for minecraft items I cut out of paper - redstone, diamond, gold bar, and a fish. We ordered pizza, and I made cupcakes, some frosted green with squares of chocolate bar on top (like the building blocks in minecraft) and some blue with fish sprinkles for water - obligingly this can be found easily in the store as a combo item. Other than that, the kids played around together and generally weren't too awful to have over. It's amazing how much easier they get as they put a few years of development behind them.

Her actually bday was a week ago, but I pushed the party back to be farther away from all the Halloween hooplah. We got an ice-cream cake and had her grandparents over for dinner on the actual day and that wasn't too crazy. The cake had blue frosting all around it though, and I swear, the kids managed to smear that blue frosting over every surface in the kitchen each and every time they pulled it out to cut a slice over the week. It's a talent I suppose.

I can't believe the baby is nine. Time does have a way of marching on.
