I often get into arguments with people about how video games are a waste of money. Not to sound sexiest or anything but most of the time these are from women, not to say I haven't had any with guys though. They often bring up the price of a movie vs. the cost of a video game, I counter that by telling them that you can play a game a lot longer then you can watch a movie. Then they usually go on to say that you watch movies multiple times but when you finish a game you don't play it any more. That may be true for some people but if your like me you drain your game dry til there is nothing left in it.
Anyways, this led me to think just how many times you would have to watch a movie to get the same bang for your buck as a game.
I looked up how much it cost for a recently released movie, Valkyrie on blueray (random pick), it cost $30. And then looked up a 360 game, fallout 3 (because I liked the game), it cost $60.
Now getting the time it takes to watch the movie was easy (2 hours), but I had to get a rough estimate on the time on the game. I said 40 hours, although I know the game can go on longer then that I figured the average game takes that long so I picked that. Yes, the price of movies and games do go up and down I just picked the highest prices I could find on quick notice.
Now for a bit of math;
Movie: view time 2 hours / $30 = $15 cost per hour
Video game: play time 40 hours / $60 = $1.50 cost per hour
Movie after 4 watches = 1.87
and at 5 watches it goes below the cost per hour of a video game.
Now if your cheap and buy dvd instead of blueray, it goes down to 3 watches before it goes below a video game.
For me it is worth more to buy a video game then a movie. On average I watch a movie maybe 2 or 3 times, and it is not uncommon for me to clock over 100 hours into a game (hell I clocked over 70 hours just playing the spy in TF2). I suppose all just depends on how many times a person is willing to watch a movie or how long a person will play a game.
And for a bit of fun;
The price of a video game if it was the same cost per hour of a movie = $600
The price of a movie if it was the same cost per hour of a video game = $3
Telling that to a person your arguing with = priceless
Side note: I had forgotten how much I love math.
