I'm only 30 yrs behind the rest of the world...
I finally watched Alien tonight. I was flipping through the channels and noticed it had started on FMC one minute before, so I figured I hadn't missed anything. I made a quick call to Jak to ask if he thought I could watch it and still be able to sleep tonight.. he's as big a weenie as I am when it comes to horror/gore and this is one of his favorites from way back. He assured me I should be fine as there's only two particularly gross scenes and the special effects are pretty outdated.
That last one is especially true. I found myself laughing hysterically during the "gut busting" scene as well as the point where Dallas(the captain) gets caught. The baby one is too obviously a puppet (and as Jak said, is clearly connected to a remote control car when it runs away) and the adult version is way too obviously a person in a suit. When it reached out to get Dallas all I could think of was it saying "I want a hug!!!!" Silly.
The one part that sort of freaked me the headless android trying to grab at them, but then I have this whole issue with non-humans moving like humans so that's just a personal hang up. Granted, as much as I'm making fun of all this, had I seen this as a child there would have been nightmares a plenty.
The SE may be outdated but the direction and writing is not. Even knowing pretty much roughly what was going to happen I was still on the edge of my seat, and often yelling at Ripley to hurry up, or at the very end telling her "I really don't think that's it... I think the alien's gotta be on the ship.. we've still got 15 minutes left, I'd watch your back if I were you..." because that's how into it I was. Good film.
Sometime in my youth (I have no idea how old) I remember Aliens coming on TV, and it wasn't too long before I turned it off from being too frightened. I think its time to add it to the Netflix queue and see how silly or scary it is now.
Should I bother with Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection? I know the latter is universally regarded as pretty terrible, but I think opinions on 3 are kind of mixed.. so I'd be interested to know whether or not I should bother.
