Nothing less than a knight

Observations on a second viewing of The Dark Knight:

For the second time when Maggie Gyllenhaal smiled I flashed on the Joker, but this time I think I know why. Back in the Eighties there was an artist who drew Batman named Alan Davis, and his art has a pretty distinctive bent to it, including a somewhat feminine Joker. I'm almost certain that's what I'm flashing on. How bizarre is it that a real person's natural face makes me flash on comic art from over twenty years ago?

The Joker's makeup here keeps tweaking me. It's not so much the scars or even the huge lipstick smile (though it reminds me of another trope I hate - crazy woman going crazy all over her face with the lipstick), it's the eye makeup. At first I thought it was reminding me of The Crow, but that's probably just my strong attraction to that movie and character, and honestly that's so potentially morbid I hate even saying it out loud (so to speak). Watching it again I realize that the blacking around his eyes matches exactly what we never see independently but can logically conclude is under Batman's mask. Which is interesting.

The Joker's speech patterns, especially in the restaurant kitchen scene, are reminding me of someone but I can't remember who. Maybe writing it down will help?

I want to use "Because we have to chase him" as a title for something so badly I can taste it.

Gee, Scarecrow seemed awfully happy at Batman showing up. Hmmm.

Where have I seen that sky hook contraption before? Because I'm sure I have.

OK, I don't exactly hate the Batpod, but why did the Tumbler have to die? *sniff* Though that's actually part of what gets to me about this movie - it's one more thing that's been taken away from him. Burning down the mansion in Batman Begins, it's like that was just a beginning and the plan all along was to take everything away from him.

Which means Alfred needs to watch his back.

Casting Batman in the pariah role like this - it's like it's so big I can't even start to frame what I want to say about it.

Ummm. More later I hope. Really, I swear there was more thinky stuff than this. I know there was more about Harvey claiming to be Batman.
