So today at my work was flu shots for the regular flu since the H1N1 flu shot won't be available to everyone else for a couple of months but that's not the point of all of this. While working, I was listening on the radio about how New York state has mandated that all of its health care officials get the H1N1 flu shot. Bit surprised that there would be such an uproar about getting a shot.
I found out that only 45% of health care workers in New York get the seasonal flu shot. I know there's a chance that the vaccine may not work but I rather get it than take the chance of getting the flu and being sick for nearly a week guaranteed. For me as well, I rather be comforted by the fact that the people working in the hospitals are being protected as well but instead you get the ugly truth that less than half of the workers not protected from the flu.
It seems that the main issue that the people who are against the shot is that they desired to have choice about their bodies. Well I think they don't get the same choice about this. They work with the sick everyday and that if H1N1 is serious as people think it is (I'm not sure it is or not), wouldn't you want them to protect themselves in every way possible? They shouldn't get to gamble with their bodies like everyone else.
I don't see why people are making a big deal about it. Just get the shot. Their job involves people's health. They shouldn't be part of the problem. They do deserve to lose their job because they were willing to risk the lives of other people for it.
