So I finally managed to rent the documentary Religulous. I love Bill Maher and the subject always interests me.
If you don't know, Religulous is a documentary about Bill Maher on the front and Larry 'something' (the guy who directed Borat) traveling around America, Europe, and Israel asking questions of people on religion. Ok. mostly it's the big 3. There's a few back handed references to others and the insult to Scientology. A great moment is when Maher goes to London in this area where people preach their religious views to the crowd. And Maher is there dressed kind of like a hobo preaching the tenents of Scientology. And it was all true. And people in other countries don't really know about Scientology. So this was hillarious.
But Bill Maher makes a good point though. Scientology sounds just as stupid/crazy as any other religion. I say that not in the hating sort of way. It's a funny movie. It is somewhat informative. Mostly reitterating people's reaction when the subject of questioning religion. And that's what it's all about. It's just asking questions. Sure with a bit of sarcasm, but it's not as bad as the religious people really make it themselves seem. And most of them are legitimatly nice people. I say most. A couple of them....wow.
There is a huge bitterness to asking and to the askers. Bitterness and pity. I've seen it myself. Not just for the movie.
The movie had two types of funny stuff. First was Bill Maher's antics. And they were funny. Some in a cute snyde sort of way that I enjoy. The other was the interviewed people being their own stupid religious selves. It was funny! Then it got sad. Cuz these people believe it. It's more the minority of these fools. But many of them are religious leaders.
I reccomend watching it if you have a sense of humor and don't get offended.
