unbelievable bad-then-good day

May 30, 2013 19:03

Yesterday morning I was at work, typing away, sipping on my coffee, feeling sort of sleepy, when I got a call from a hidden number, then a call from my mother that I missed, and finally a text.

Were you in an accident in Canada and arrested?

Um, what?

Turns out my grandparents were targeted by one of those deplorable grandparent scams. Someone called up, identified themselves as "Hawthorne law enforcement," and informed my grandfather that I had been arrested in Ontario, Canada after rear-ending someone and I was found to be high on cough syrup. Would he please be so kind as to immediately wire $3000 for the lawyer overseeing my case.

What kills me is that he was on his way out the door to actually DO it when my grandmother, thank god, smelled a rat and told him to stop and call my mother first. I felt so sick and angry and violated that my name was used to prey on and take advantage of my grandparents' love for me, and it almost worked. What sort of awful human does that?

That in itself would have made for a memorable day, but it wasn't even noon, and Justin and I had planned for a fancy dinner out on the town at seven.

We got home around ten, and as we passed the TV Justin said "Oh, hey, I found this new mod for Skyrim you should try. It's a new downloadable content quest."

We met because of Skyrim a year and a half ago. He knows I will never say no to Skyrim. So I hit the couch and turned on the game, and found out that he had built the quest himself. He seriously spent weeks secretly writing code to add new content into my favorite game--for me. Be still my heart!

Near the end of the quest, which began as your typical go-here-go-there-end-up-with-treasure deal, I began finding notes on the ground.

What could be in the locked box? Gold? Enchanted weaponry? Another bagful of trinkets to sell to a merchant? Would you be satisfied?

And more notes.

There is indeed treasure in the box. But it's unique. It can be equipped only by an extraordinary individual. One full of compassion and beauty. And it won't change your battle stats, but you'll come to see that the treasure itself isn't the most important thing...

When I found the treasure chest, there was nothing inside except one final note to the tune of Whoops, there's nothing here! But at that point Justin placed a real treasure chest in my hands, tiny and wooden and engraved. He looked me dead in the eye. "You are awesome," he said. "You are the best thing that's ever happened to me, and I want to spend my life with you. So maybe you'd like to marry me."

The ring was inside, a big red garnet stone that is so perfect I was speechless.

We're engaged!!!!!
