do you remember when all you had to say to me was "Hey"?

I've been watching Lost lately, because I finally decided that I'd spent enough time hearing people fawn over it without knowing what it was all about. And even though it is one of your glorified, modern-day Gilligan's Island shows, I'm finding it quite interesting.

The basic drift of the plot is that an airplane crashes on an island somewhere in the South Pacific, and the survivors of the crash have to then keep on surviving. Fantastical science-fictiony elements crop up later but are not worth mentioning in detail for just a general overview.

There's a Korean married couple on the island who don't speak English. The husband keeps telling his wife, Sun, that they need to just look out for each other and not worry about the others -- he says that he will provide for her, and that's all that's important. One episode is centered around Sun and her husband, with flashbacks from earlier in their relationship before the island. In one of these flashbacks, Sun comes home to find a puppy in a gift box waiting for her on her coffee table. She picks it up and is holding it when her husband comes out of their bedroom, adjusting the cufflinks in his shirt. "Do you like it?" he asks. "I've been working so much I thought you might enjoy the company. Of course you'll have to train it, and feed it." Sun doesn't say anything, just looks at him kind of sadly, and he asks her if she's alright.

"Do you remember when all you had to give me was a flower?" she asks.

My heart went out to her. I think I know that feeling.

Why do we get so desensitized to the things that once meant so much to us? When does it stop being enough?
