I've been pondering this for several years. I'd like to consolidate or clarify how I'm living on the interest because, lets face it, most of us have homes on the web now. Barring Big Catastrophe, the Internet's not going away. I will probably end up collecting even more homes, an example being this awesome spot I just learned about:
http://pinterest.com/ Since 2001, my heart's home has been livejournal. However, I don't want to invite everyone, in. It's just not safe to do so, and I've already made most of my journal friends-only. Also, I have to admit that I'm a little worried about LJ. Ever since it got bought, it's changed towards the commercial. I heartily dislike the new log-in page -full of clutter and arguably sexist images of blond women. I'm not sure what will become of LJ and am wondering if I should download all of my old entries -to keep them safe.
A few years back, I started a new blog, which was to be my public blog -librarytour.wordpress.com. Unfortunately, I've come to understand that the focus is too narrow and my time is just too short to keep up with it. Most of the time that blog is a no-man's land.
Then there are my other web homes:
Then there's my writing life -one day, I will need a grown up writer's website on which to sell my books and answer readers' questions. So then the list becomes:
- Livejournal
- Librarytour
- Flickr
- Facebook
- Goodreads
- Writer's website
That, my friends, is (as I'm known to say) a crapload of web homes. But each has a separate purpose -so I can't see how to consolidate.
My friend Carl Tashian has a family homepage that I've long considered clever:
http://tashian.com/ Also, I like the style and function of his personal homepage, which has links to all his other projects:
http://tashian.com/carl/. I'd like to build something like this, but I don't really know how. My html knowledge is super rudimentary, and I can't pay anyone to create a site for me.
So I feel kind of stuck. Luckily, I also feel kind of inspired. I just finished reading a book called "Blogging for Bliss: Crafting Your Own Online Journal" that was really helpful. I have an idea to build out my librarytour blog to something more general -a Life, Love, and Libraries kind of thing. My goal is to have something together by the end of the summer.
However, a better librarytour blog doesn't solve my other issue of being all-over-the-place.
Do any of you other web-sters have thoughts on this? I was going to create a poll with which to gather friend's opinions of how to approach this challenge, but I'm not even sure what to put in the poll!
So, in a more general sense: thoughts?
