Surreal moment of the day:
Pumping gas while Patrick Swayze serenades me with "She's Like the Wind" at 90 decibels through the gas station sound system.
It's amazing how soundtrack music can make even ordinary tasks feel extraordinary.
...
And yes, I loved dirty dancing as a kid... name one girl my age who didn't and I'll allow you to pick on me. For extra ammo, I'll recap the time my girl scout troop took a trip to Lake Lure (where the movie was shot) and I got the chance to dance on Babe's bridge.
One important note on this: I was a fat chunky kid.
Imagine: awkward 9 (or 10?) year old fat chunky girl in Jams (coca-cola jams no doubt) and a ultraviolet neon pink tank top (pigtails and converse hi-tops optional) attempting to look alluring while dancing on the bridge that a (OMGBBQ!!!) famous person had been on. I bet there are even tons of pictures (albeit bad "I just got my first camera" pictures - badly framed and with at least one head cut off) that documented the occasion.
.........
Which brings me to ask: Do kids these days still have these horribly awkward years? Do we just not see it? Is it partially due to the internet and the access to the "cool factor" it brings? I mean, when it came to trends, we were very limited by our community as kids. We only had the chance to be as cool as our friends/local mall/parents allowed us to be... unless we had some distant relative somewhere introducing us to new things. Now, with the power of the intarweb the possibilities are endless for kids to broaden their horizons... almost to the detriment of them having an actual childhood (think 8 year old girls who want nothing more than a Coach bag for their birthday).
So this all makes me wonder...what it's going to be like when I (finally) have kids? And how do you preserve some of that youth without being an overbearing parent?
