He should’ve known Hiro was a romantic. Anyone who wasn’t thoroughly disgusted with the unrealistic heroism of the Kensei Takezo stories would be. So, Kensei supposed, he shouldn’t have been at all surprised when Hiro had had his tragic love affair with Yaeko.
But he had been. The incredibly stupid part of himself that believed in people- the part he’d spent years carefully cultivating cynicism and bitterness to repress- had given him faith in Hiro that had blinded him to the carp’s traitorous feelings. All those things he’d done, he’d done for Yaeko, and never for him.
“He carved out his own heart and gave it to the dragon, saying ‘This is my love.’” Kensei had, he thought, unknowingly followed the tale. He simply hadn’t recognized the dragon for what he was until too late.
