A/N: I don't know why I'm posting this on my journal, but it helps me catalogue what I've written, so I will.

The first time Adam ever saw Nakamura Hiro, he was willing to pass it off as a hallucination. Although he knew that his carp had been from far into the future- it was relatively obvious between his blatherings about time travel and his freakish knowledge of Adam’s timeline- he hadn’t thought their paths would ever cross again. Hiro certainly hadn’t recognized him, so that meant they’d never met face-to-face.

Then again, he mused to himself, he hadn’t met anyone “face-to-face” in a long while- he’d kept his visage hidden for a long time now to avoid anyone recognizing his apparently- he still occasionally found it hard to believe even after all this time- eternal youth. And besides, at this age it was doubtful Hiro would retain any memory should he see him.

So it was with only a moderate amount of panic (he hadn’t yet found out what would happen if he created a paradox, and he wasn’t particularly keen to find out) that Adam slipped into the boy’s room. The lights were all off save for a dim glow from underneath the sheets of Hiro’s bed.

He was probably up reading some manga. Linking his memories of Hiro to this modern time, that certainly seemed like his cup of tea.

For a moment, he stood perfectly still and silent, just listening to the giggles and gasps of a five-year-old reading a comic book intended for much older eyes. He closed his eyes, a small smile playing across his face, and he filed away this memory to be kept with the others he dredged up when he was in need of a pick-me-up.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed in the dark, and Hiro’s flashlight hit his carpeted floor and came to rest and Adam’s feet.

"Kuso!”

The child stumbled out of his bed and chased after the flashlight. He squealed softly when, in his clumsiness, he ran straight into Adam’s leg. Before he landed on his butt, Adam caught his arms and steadied him, muttering, “Careful, gaki.”

Hiro stared up at him, in his naiveté (stupidity, Adam thought to himself) not realizing that strangers were not in fact supposed to appear randomly in his room. The boy looked at the hands on his shoulders, then back up at Adam’s face, grinning brilliantly. “You saved me!” He then promptly hugged Adam’s knees, nearly knocking the man off balance.

Irritated, Adam pulled the little boy off of him and sat him on the bed. He then picked up the flashlight and placed it in Hiro’s waiting hands before sitting next to him. Hiro smiled at him again and started making strange faces in the light. Adam was torn between further irritation and amusement.

Before he made up his mind, Hiro seemed to bore with his venture and looked back towards Adam. “Who are you?”

For a moment, Adam wasn’t really sure what to answer.

“…Kensei Takezo.”

Hiro cocked his head to the left. “Dare ka?”

Adam was thrown for a loop. He’d been under the impression that Hiro had been brought up on tales of the very adventures he’d forced Adam to live over three hundred years ago. He didn’t know what to make of this total lack of recognition.

Perhaps the best method was to pick his brains apart and see if he’d simply forgotten (no matter how unlikely it seemed). “You must’ve heard of me. I’m the greatest hero Japan has ever known!”

Hiro’s eyes sparkled with fascination. “Hontou ni?” Kensei nodded. “Sugoi!”

Adam couldn’t stop the smile that that Hiro’s reaction provoked. “And my Hime-sama was the most beautiful woman in all of Japan… Together, we won many battles, and did many heroic deeds.”

Adam leant down to whisper conspiratorially into Hiro’s ear. “But, you know… what I’ve always loved more than anything else in the entire world, even more than my Princess…” Hiro leant forward eagerly. “Is my Carp.”

Hiro made a “blech!” sound. “Carp is nasty!”

Adam chuckled. “I suppose it may be an acquired taste…” he murmured.

Abruptly, Adam stood up and walked towards the open window. “Sayonara, Hiro-kun.” And after just a moment, he was gone from sight.

“Kensei-sama!” Hiro called after him, rushing to the window. But Adam was nowhere in sight.

The next day, Nakamura Kaito looked severely disgruntled when Adam saw him. The Company, now toddling along at a healthy pace and gaining new and ambitious members every day, was having the business equivalent of a senior staff meeting.

The man’s irritation was nearly palpable around him, and Adam found himself wondering if the tension mounting in the room because of it was yet thick enough to cut with a knife.

Linderman was attempting to keep the meeting calm by talking about only positive interests, but was eventually dissuaded from his efforts and requested with a sigh that the meeting be adjourned until a time when they would all be feeling “cooperative and unlike four-year-olds.”

Immediately, the others began to file out of the room, but Adam simply leaned against the doorframe, clearly amused by the situation. As Nakamura passed by him, Adam muttered, “You know, hotels really should have some better security systems in place. Anyone could just waltz in and fill a child’s head with all sorts of insane things…”

Before Nakamura could come up with a suitable reaction, Adam was already turning a corner into his private office.

Sitting back in his squishy swivel chair (quite possibly his favorite invention of this new century), Adam reflected that he’d made a valid point. Security systems really were too lax nowadays. And he’d thought that society cared about its children.
