I loved it. Movies that impact me in a heavily emotional way are few and far between, and this one felt like a 20-pound sledge to the back of my head.
I'm not a fanboy, and I'm not a big comic book guy. I did read the comic, er, graphic novel once, a few years ago, and did enjoy it.. but the movie affected me more. The ginormous IMAX screen and 120db of digital audio helped, I'm sure.
As someone who appreciates physics and Jung, I always try to remember the importance of the observer in relation to the observed when an evaluation is performed.
With that in mind, to the observing consciousness that I call "me," the movie is an abject display of futility. The entire movie, all of the characters, all of the subplots and storylines, heroes, villains, love, sex, violence, tenderness, anger, and death, is as good of a model of the human condition as you can get. Everyone does what they can do, and only what they can do. People perpetrate and perpetuate evil and cause suffering, other people attempt to stop them or alleviate it. You can't change that, and on top of that, it doesn't matter that you can't. All of the great works that we mighty should look upon are nothing more than a rotting desert by the time we get around to looking upon them, so why bother?
I find it interesting that's what I got out of it. A different time, I different set of circumstances than what I'm going through right now, and it would probably be different. On some level, I'm sure I have a DESIRE for someone to tell me that life is futility; ergo, that's what I thought the movie was telling me.
In the same vein, I think the movie itself is a grand Rorschach test for the audience; you, sir, what did YOU see? The frat boys saw a huge blue wang, and became uncomfortable (Possibly homosexual. Hurm..) Devout Christians saw a huge blue wang and a nice set of tits, and also became uncomfortable. Nitpicking comic book fanboys saw a squid-free, steaming pile of offal, and became angry. Others saw a really long action movie, and were entertained.
In short, I liked it, and will watch it again, and will shell out some hard-earned dough for the DVD.
