The laptop is unhappy. Not unusable, but seriously unhappy. We're running out of ideas here. Justin's about ready to crack it open to see if a fan's died or some such.
The problem is that CPU Usage is through the roof. It keeps spiking to 100% on very trivial tasks. First thoughts: virus, rootkit, RAM/bus problems. We've ruled these all out. Here's what we've done:
- Virus scan with AVG.
- AdAware sucky scan.
- CCleaner removal of junk and registry fixing.
- JkDefrag full defragmentation in safe mode.
- chkdsk in safe mode.
- Rootkit Revealer scan.
- Spybot Search & Destroy. (Replacing AdAware)
- Avast! Anti-Virus full scan. (Replacing AVG)
- Speedfan diagnostics to make sure nothing's overheating.
- Various small tests to check for RAM, bus or voltage regulation problems.
- Thorough inspection of processes and services.
Everything looks fine. I haven't done much different of late, either, to offer obvious explanation for the sudden change. At this point, I'm really thinking it's got to be hardware related. I don't want to do disk recovery and reinstall everything again unless I have no other option. After all, the last time I went through all of that, it turned out to have been entirely unnecessary as it was a hardware problem all along. My RAM was jiggly as one of the brackets was bent; we've reseated the RAM already and tested for jigglability. Are there any other potential software problems that we're overlooking? Everything looks happy, cept my CPU usage. We're at a loss...
