I know exactly what you mean. I was the only person in my orientation group at BP Solar that wasn't going to be working on the floor. The woman that sat to my left was going to be working two jobs; the one at BP Solar and one in a deli. That would sometimes mean 12 hours on the floor soldering the same electronics over and over again, and then going on to another job for several more hours. And she's OK with it. Then there was the family that was filling out paperwork in HR at the same time as me. AN ENTIRE FAMILY. Two sons, a daughter, a father, and a mother, all going to work at BP Solar, all collectively earning $46.25 towards their future, a sad, advanceless one. Some people met on the production line 25 years ago when the plant was in Rockville, MD, got married, and stayed with the plant when it moved to Frederick, half an hour away. That's twenty five years ago, and they're still on the production line (but they're level six employees, which means they get to take apart defective modules and repair them, 12 hours a day. what a

At this point I dream of a job where I can wear a collared shirt. Working on the floor sucks. It's dirty, loud, and often confusing (at least in my position). I started as a level 4, but I do some level 6 work (and even a little level 8). Today I was helping to train a guy who had just started yesterday. At the end of the day, I asked him how he thought he liked the job. "Doesn't matter," he said. "I can't not work, you know?"
And then I get into conversations like this: Her: "I'm working all the time now, it's nuts... I never have a spare moment." Me: "Yeah, I can sympathize.. what are your hours?" Her: "Tuesday through Sunday, 4:30 - 10"
Ouch, those 20 hour weeks must be killing you.
This week I worked Mon - Fri, 8-8-12-12-4. And this was an easy week compared to some I had last summer, which was Sunday through Saturday 8-8-12-12-8-12-8. 68 hours, 7 days. And there were people who still had more hours than me. Amazing...
