This story is second hand. You know how a lot of phone support has been outsourced to India? A lot of the support reps also give themselves western names. In fact, this happens at work too. For example, I've talked to "Annie" (ha).

So an Indian coworker of mine (his last name is Subramony) called customer service, and was greeted by "Jim" (or whatever). A few minutes in, Jim says, "OK, I'm going to file a report. Could I get your last name, please?"

"Subramony. S-U-B-R..."

"Yeah, I know how to spell 'Subramony'."

Right, "Jim".
