No idea what anything is without philosophers telling me.

[Edit: OKAY GUYS, here is the same kind of objection that was voiced to cabrutus, except that time it was voiced by sisyphus http://community.livejournal.com/real_philosophy/300334.html?thread=9769518#t9769518 ...It's a bit more eloquent but basically pokes at the same darn thing that I'm poking at ( Read more... )

Can you please name which philosophers are telling you to forget all about your experiences because they are all in your head?

Can you please provide references for this 'philosophy of what a dog is?' I'm intrigued by possibilities in this field and would like to subscribe to the newsletter if possible.

they can't tell us what justice, truth, meaning, knowledge, goodness, beauty, persons, etc., are. We need philosophy for everything else.

Science do not tell us what those things are, because they don't have to.

The thing is we don't need philosophy to do that either.

Why don't you ask what people do with philosophy, again?

What is philosophy on LJ?

Most philosophy I've come across in these communities seem more like mental masturbation than actual thinking up solutions or explanations for real world problems and phenomena.

If it's some kind of a solution, then I'd tend to think of it as some kind of a science...

Science is empirically testable; logic isn't, but logic is used in coming up with scientific (and engineering) solutions to problems pretty universally. Also, I don't know that we can empirically determine what knowledge is, but that doesn't rule out empirical knowledge, or the utility in gaining a better understanding of knowledge so that we can improve our methods of acquiring it.
