So, the boys and I went to a party we've been to quite a few years in a row. It's held by a couple that married late, and now have a 4-year-old, so it started out for grownups, and evolved into a family friendly affair. They don't play slasher videos anymore, but the crowd is very bright, witty, and generally good natured.
My 8th grader did an entirely original costume. He went as the King of Probability. He wore a white robe he sewed out of an old sheet. He had statistical equations covering it. He also had a wand that had a 6-sided dice on the end, white spray on his hair, white makeup on his face, and a crown made up of the jokers and few aces from 6 decks of cards. He still had to explain it a lot but it was definitely a costume. I've done some high concept costumes over the years, so perhaps he gets it from me.
My 6th grader went as a Kamikaze Watermelon. Yes, you read that right. Oddly, this wasn't an entirely original costume. He saw one on YouTube. We took the foam rubber from an old costume of mine, cut it down and oblong, grabbed two shades of green fabric and sewed it over, and he made two rockets out of cardboard tubes from wrapping paper and duct tape, and he was set. Curiously, he also found it necessary to explain what he was quite often.
I went as a cyborg from the future. I had blinking multi-colored LEDs under a white "Hard Rock Cafe Europa" shirt I had made with a picture of one of Jupiter's moons on it. I also had some silver makeup on my skin, selectively, but it didn't play out as dramatically as I'd hoped. The shirt looked store bought, which is good. I'll wear it again. In retrospect, I should have put the silver all over my stomach and said I as a cyborg with "Abs of steel" and kept showing it. Better than Buns of Steel, I think. It just shows to go you, you should always beta test your creative ideas, or open off Broadway and workshop your act for awhile. We had fun and I was glad I went.
Anyway, at least the boys' costumes are set for Wednesday. That's good because they've got swim practice and a concert tonight, scouts tomorrow, plus homework which we're a little ahead on, so, the week is starting on track.
