summary of school: doing well. could be doing better. will pass the class.

been thinking about my career choice. would it have been so terrible to go into the trades? recently i found out about mikeroweworks.com, a site which mike rowe, host of dirty jobs, created so that people in the trades (carpenters, electricians and the like) would have somewhere to go. somewhere to connect and exchange ideas about getting more people into construction and rekindle interest in maintaining our infrastructure.

am i getting a degree in mechanical engineering just so i can say i'm a geek or smart or for because my parents and teachers wanted me to? would it be so terrible if after getting this degree, i went back and apprenticed with a carpenter or an electrician or a plumber? the HVAC industry is looking for people.

in his intro video (put in in 2008), mike explains that he believes we need to revamp the way we think about jobs, about "good jobs" or "bad jobs", because a job is a job. trade jobs are extremely important, since they're what make the rest of the world go round.

on his site there's a link to look for jobs in the industry, and one of the categories to search is engineering. this makes me feel like i could be part of the trades if i wanted to, could work with my hands and help people with the skilled labor they need. is this what i have been running from my whole life? labor? will engineering alienate me from the things i love doing most? working with my hands?

rowe's point of view gives voice to the anger that i feel at people who get into engineering for money, or fame, or fortune. they don't understand what it's like to need to do something, to need to learn or work with their hands. going to college is all well and good, if it's for the right reasons.

is my degree going to help me or hinder me?
how will i know, when all i ever hear around me is "college is the way to go; the trades are for people who couldn't make it to where you are."

why can't we all be happy where we are belong, and not assign useless ideas of levels of happiness/intelligence based on jobs or money?

some of the richest people in the world are some of the least intelligent and most depressed.
