Discovery

I know there's a second season out of this now, but because I am always, always late with these things, I'm only just halfway through the first season. But I love it!

It started off not very much like Star Trek, it felt like a story that had escaped from BSG or something like that, all fast-paced war and ambiguous characters and space battles all the time. I enjoy that sort of thing too, and it's not as if Star Trek hasn't had wars before, but I liked seeing what felt more like traditional Trek in the most recent two episodes we've watched (the time warp one and the first contact with the harmony planet). Though still with the spin of the new series; they're starting to feel like a new Star Trek series instead of, idk, a war story told in the Star Trek universe. The movies completely lost me by not feeling at all like Star Trek, this is seeming much more promising. The time warp episode was particularly fun to watch, they told that really well.

And the characters are starting to feel familiar to me. Michael is amazing, of course, and I'm increasingly loving Saru and his predator-detecting ganglia and his attempts to analyse himself into being a better captain. Lorca has me intrigued, he's not a type I like but he's fun to watch. I'm not sure about Tyler, I don't entirely trust him. The Klingons, I'm on the fence about. I'm not convinced by the decision to have them actually speak Klingon to each other all the time and use subtitles, it adds another layer of distance which makes it hard for me to be interested in their internal dramas. But L'rell does have my attention, so perhaps I'll suspend judgement on that. And I miss Captain Georgiou terribly. I'm mostly managing to avoid spoilers, but I have gleaned enough to suspect that I haven't seen the last of her altogether, which I hope is a good thing :-).

Oh, and Tilly! Tilly is delight and is such a perfect foil for Michael, anything with the two of them interacting is pure gold.
