Yuletide reveals

Now for the traditional Yuletide reveal post. First off, my own excellent 'The Lives of Others' gift fic, Operation Reunification, was written by blueteak. Thank you!

And then there's what I wrote. I wound up writing three fics for my recipient because I couldn't decide between various plot bunnies. None of the ideas I had were 100% perfect matches for her prompts, but between them all I think I covered most things. And as I may have mentioned, I'm a bit enthusiastic about this fandom right now.

The first one I wrote was A Perfectly Human Monster, an Endeavour/Rivers of London crossover in which old!Nightingale meets young!Morse and they solve a case together. My recipient requested both fandoms, and I remembered that line in Broken Homes about Nightingale being wheeled out to interview all the really nasty serial killers over the years and see if any of them were magical, and I thought of Mason Gull. It was going to just be the meeting, and then I had the idea for actually making Gull a magician and it all kind of spiralled out of control from there on. Plot does this to me sometimes. I did enjoy connecting the dots between all the characters, especially the idea that Thursday had met some magicians during the war and hadn't had a good experience.

Then after that I had a ferocious plot bunny that actually made me dance around my living room with excitement at the thought of writing it. This was Folly to be Wise, a Rivers of London fic about remembering terrible things, in which Nightingale, Lesley, Peter and Toby go off to investigate a haunted cellar and Nightingale gets caught in a trap. It came about because I was listening to the Rivers of London rap and contemplating the start, which is the Thomas Grey quote the series opens with, and that somehow turned into a plot bunny of remarkable strength and size about whether or not ignorance is in fact bliss, with reference to Ettersberg. I started this fic on a Friday and had it finished by Monday, and I think it's one of the best things I've written this year, and might belong quite high on my list of top ten fics I've ever written, for the way theme and plot and character all work together in it.

And then there's the third fic. Now the previous Yuletide, my recipient also requested Rivers of London, and she left a prompt for Nightingale and Peter undercover at a gay bar. I saw that back in the summer when I was wandering through the NYR prompts, thought it sounded like fun, wrote half a fic for it and then got stuck on the slash part and gave up. But this year I was coincidentally assigned to her, and after writing the other two fics, I had the idea of finishing this one off and giving it to her as a bonus. Which is how I came to write tropetastic explicit sex pollen slash for Yuletide this year. It's only the third piece of explicit slashfic I've ever written, and I was still finishing it off until late on Christmas Eve. I wouldn't have finished it at all except that I was researching Banksy for a different WIP and came across this picture and had the idea for how to write the ending in a typically distant Peter way. Because there's no universe in which Peter would ever have an actual conversation about this without layers of urban trivia obscuring it. So that's The Purple Jug.
