I knew you by a single light, by one
Severe and sudden angle of your air;
I knew you in the strain that made you spare
And pointed, like a lone ray of sun
Piercing the clouds, and let your troubles run
Unhindered, with a predatory stare.
I knew you all this time in such a rare
Cast that now, when your unrest has done,
I feel outdated, like a courtly clan
Ousted by your self-revolt, an old
Struggle’s souvenir that you should ban
From your freed land. But surely all this bold
In your mosaic life, this latest plan,
Has left me space to fill some minor fold.
