if I'm running out of time / then I'm running out of time

Wishing you all a Happy New Year - one that will be better than the last, filled with bright moments, great levity and stunning depth and some time spent in the middle to sustain you and balance you. I wish you love. I wish you laughter. I wish you life, lived as well as you can live it.

I volunteered to work tomorrow, so there won't be much, if any, celebrating tonight.

I was going to do one of those "year in review" memes, but then it just got tedious and depressing.

The biggest highlight of 2011 was driving over 600 miles, for over ten hours, to visit with my best friend. There are so many memories from that trip that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Attempting to put it all into words is impossible. *clings to raynemaiden like plastic wrap*

I spent most of the year unemployed, finally finding work at a lab this fall. It's not ideal, but I'm trying to be grateful for finding something after spending such a long time searching.

In 2011, I continued my love of Supernatural, but found new loves in Doctor Who and The Mighty Boosh, including ridiculous crushes on David Tennant and Noel Fielding that have yet to dissipate.

2011 saw the end of Harry Potter on film, but also the return of The Muppets!

My old computer died and I got a new iMac. Which meant I finally got a high speed connection, which helped with glutting myself on DW and the Boosh, Never Mind The Buzzcocks and The IT Crowd, Sons Of Anarchy and more. It also meant more exposure to music. Not altogether legal, but... my wallet and my appetite for new music don't really match up.

Some of my favorite records from 2011 (whether they came out this past year or not):

• Adele - 21
• Austra - Feel It Break
• Bon Iver - s/t
• The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow
• Daughtry - Break This Spell
• The Decemberists - The King Is Dead
• Florence + the Machine - Ceremonials
• Gillian Welch - The Harrow and the Harvest
• Iron & Wine - Kiss Each Other Clean
• Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - Here We Rest
• Jeffrey Foucault - Horse Latitudes
• Joshua James - Build Me This and everything else
• Justin Townes Earle - Harlem River Blues
• Kasabian - Velociraptor!
• The Kills - Blood Pressures
• King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mine
• Matthew and the Atlas - ALL. THE. SONGS.
• Milo Greene - likewise, all the songs
• MuteMath - Odd Soul
• Noah Gundersen - Family EP
• Of Monsters and Men - My Head is an Animal
• R.E.M. - Collapse Into Now
• Tame Impala - Innerspeaker
• Thao & Mirah - s/t
• Tom Waits - Bad As Me
• Wild Flag - s/t
• Yuck - s/t
• 8in8 - Nighty Night (almost entirely because of Neil singing "The Problem With Saints")

... and so much more.

Concerts attended:

March: Wild Flag
April: Toad the Wet Sprocket, Iron & Wine
May: Adele with the Civil Wars opening
June: Thao & Mirah, The Decemberists, Florence + the Machine
August: Bon Iver, Band of Horses
September: Jeffrey Foucault
October: Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, The Civil Wars with Milo Greene opening
November: Trampled By Turtles

Writing-wise: in 2011, I challenged myself by participating in two blindfold_spn rounds, tried my first long-ish fic, and wrote in a new fandom (Boosh RPF). Poems were a bit sparse, alas. But I did put together my first chapbook. Didn't sell a single copy, but it's still some kind of accomplishment, innit?

Fic round-up:

- The Learning Curve (SPN: Meg/Ava, NC-17, lessons in Hell)
- Freezing Hands and Bloodless Veins (SPN: Dean/Death, Tessa, R, groping during 6.11)
- We Dance To The Beat (SPN RPF: Jared/Jensen, hard R, dance club frottage, AU)
- Tea for Two (SPN RPF: Jared/Jensen, NC-17, teabagging)
- Rope Trick (SPN RPF: JDM/Jensen, NC-17, PWP, bondage and toys)
- The Light-bearer (SPN: Sam, Dean, Alastair, R, dreamwalking in Hell)
- Betting on black (SPN: Dean, Sam, Castiel, Crowley, PG, end of S6 drabble)
- Instant Pleasure (SPN RPF: Jared/Jensen, NC-17, escalating dirty photographs)
- Wrapped in grace and in sin (SPN: Michael/Dean, NC-17, Michael takes the form of John and visits Dean in his dreams)
- A Dainty Dish To Set Before The King (SPN: Bela, Crowley, Lilith, Alastair, R, Bela before/during/after Hell, torture)
- Until I Wake Your Ghost (SPN: Cassie/Lisa, NC-17, post-6.21, Cassie hopes Lisa will lead her to Dean)
- And at once I knew I was not magnificent (SPN: Sam/Dean, NC-17, underage, summer in western VA, 18k)
- Second Skin (SPN: Sam/Dean, PG, peeling blisters and driving on) [written in 2007 but posted this year, so I'm counting it]
- The Stone-rabbit and the Wolf-moon (Boosh RPF: Julian Barratt/Noel Fielding, R, overthinking and finally doing)
- Hex (SPN: Dean, Sam, John, PG, pre-series, Wee!chesters, fall and folklore in Pennsylvania)

And I also wrote a Jensen/Ben Edlund fic that I never posted here, but hope to expand upon and post at some point in the indefinite future (along with all the other fics I owe).

I need to do better at reading. Books read this past year:

- The Particular Sadness Of Lemon Cake - Aimee Bender
- The Electric Michelangelo - Sarah Hall
- Wildwood - Colin Meloy & Carson Ellis
- Persepolis - Marjane Satrapi

How pathetic is that? I started several others, but have yet to finish them. Many poems were read, of course. And lots of fic... though that to-read list seems no shorter.

That's how all years end, isn't it? Unfinished, with much left to do, bleeding over into the next.

This is just a road marker after all. There are many miles of road ahead. One hopes.

tennant, noel fielding, doctor who, harry potter, supernatural, music, where's neil when you need him?, friends, sons of anarchy, concerts, boosh, muppets
