I did get the
Nokia N75.
With apologies to
andyyyyyy, however, I'm taking it back on Thursday, I think.
Battery life is unacceptably and appallingly short -- I can manage maybe an hour of talk time, combined with some light browsing using Opera Mini. (The built-in Nokia browser is neat, but Opera Mini loads things a bit quicker and in an easier-to-browse format.)
Pro:
Symbian much better/more versatile than a 'dumbphone' and it all seems to run fairly quickly, without much lag The address book is absolutely better than the Motorola version I've become used to dealing with Due to Symbian, I can install things like IRC apps, which is quite cool, and it has a built-in PDF reader and readers for MS Office formats Up to 2GB of storage with MicroSD card 2.0 megapixel camera better resolution than VGA I currently have QVGA screen is very nice and bright, and the external screen and buttons are actually rather functional for music Stores vastly more SMS/MMS messages than my old phone; I don't have to worry about deleting things every few dozen messages. Lacks GPS, but does include Nokia's Navigation program from the N95, so you can pair a bluetooth GPS device with it, which is pretty slick (though I've yet to get a bluetooth GPS device) Calls are nice and loud and clear, generally speakingCon:
Battery life far, far too short No external CallerID (!!!!!) - the display pops up a little white bubble like when someone in a comic speaks, but the bubble is blank and devoid of information. That 2.0 Megapixel camera takes really awful photos -- and has an apparently impossible-to-silence loud CLICK! shutter noise The phone is physically pretty large - it's like 7 inches long when opened, and it's big enough when closed that I find myself wondering why I didn't just get a Palm or something I can't even begin to think what songs to include on a mere 2GB of memory -- I find my 60GB mp3 player too limiting :s No 3.5mm headphone jack; I'd need an adapter to stick into the PopPort slot, which is not included and which I will promptly lose if I did have 3G is not 3.5G - the cheap ($25, currently) Samsung Sync offers HSDPA, as does the V3xx for roughly $50, which currently means 2-3 times faster data than what I can get this $200 UMTS phone. Comparing the UMTS to the EDGE data I was used to, I'm already aware that downloading 2-3 times faster is a big deal and makes things a lot nicer, so doubling the speed again seems really desirable. To view details (namely, the time sent/received) on a text message, I have push keys 6 times to get to it in a context menu, instead of the info just being onscreen with the message. It's very annoying My problem now is that I don't know what to get instead. I think I'll just settle for the ages-old and possibly flawed, but cheap,
Samsung SYNC, if they won't let me just go back to my old phone until something better
(maybe?) comes along.
Yes, yes I *should* be studying, thank you for asking.
