So, while looking for
gadget pr0n over on
Engadget, I saw an
amusing flamewar about a new anti-iPod campaign:
iDont. The site is a viral [is it really viral when you
say who you are in the... er, virus?] campaign against the alleged sheep mentality of those millions of iPod consumers. While I have mentioned my dislike of the iPod... er, once or twice... and I am amused that an
Apple competitor has taken such an unusual and, frankly, accurate-in-some-ways step, the site is pretty thin on reasons to not be a sheep. It basically boils down to, "Don't listen to the herd! Be an individual! Do what we say, instead!" I think iDont has a point when they state that, "Blindly they’ve bought into the hype without ever realizing there are other mp3 players out there."
Many people, like many of our parents, don't know anything much about the portable digital audio player market, and whatever they do know is probably iPod-centric. Why? Because Apple has put commercials in prime time, slapped up billboards all over the place, taken out ads in newspapers and other print media... and made a strikingly-designed player that is simple to use, though some would say it is simple to a fault. The success has allowed Apple to encourage and continue
certain practices that are markedly restrictive. If the iDont campaign is effective, and Apple loses some market share, it will benefit everyone, because no one wins when a tech company grabs a near-monopoly.
Right?
On a lighter note, you should all see
Mrs. Henderson Presents :) It was delightful, witty and hilarious, further proving that Judi Dench is a radiant being for whom we should all be thankful. It was not a perfect film, but it was perfectly entertaining, and I think that certainly counts for something. As a bonus, there was a
young actor that played in a minor role, but gave major eye candy nonetheless. (No, he doesn't get naked, but he's majorly cute... sorry!) I'm tempted to see his next project just because he was attractive. Shallow, I am. But yes, Bob Hoskins was great, Judi Dench was fantastic, and the film is certainly worth seeing :)
I want to see X-Men: The Last Stand at the
Metreon on Sunday... on the IMAX screen. Think I can get tickets?
