I know with the school year fastly approaching there will be a new group of freshmen roaming the hall, and with all their excitment of being at college also comes what i call their high school language. With common use of the words gay, retarded, raciest words, and fag. I've been reminded just how popular these words are with high schools students these past three weeks with band camps. I can't tell you how many times i've heard the word gay or retarded this past week. It's sad really.
This leads me to the idea that there should be a class in high school that teaches students that hate language is not acceptable in the real world. That when you use these words you could be hurting others. I realize sometimes that students use these words because they are acutally mean them in terms of hate, but i think the vast majority of students use them because it's popular slang in high school. I consider myself one of these kids, I use to use the word gay to describe things that were stupid. Fortunately I had a friend correct me my freshmen year and that was the last time i ever used the word gay to describe something that was stupid. I never really understood what i was saying in high school. To me it was just a word. So that's why i think if there was a class on hate language and how it's not acceptable then just maybe the use of hate language would decrease dramatically.
