Before Amita could reply or even move slightly away, Don’s hands were wretched from her body. The sound of a body hitting the cement floor met her ears and she cracked opened her tightly sealed eyes. Standing in front of her, his back towards her in a semi-defensive pose, was Larry Fleinhardt. Just past Larry, Amita caught a glimpse of something truly terrifying. Megan Fleinhardt had her fiancé pinned to the ground, a knee between his shoulder blades, and she was screaming at him.
Of course, Don was screaming back. Finally, his call of her name had Amita scurrying away from the wall and past Larry’s protective hands. She struggled with Megan, trying to get the larger, stronger woman off Don. A burst of adrenalin allowed her to finally dislodge Megan from Don’s back.
Larry’s hands and arms were the only things that prevented Megan from landing on the same dirty cement garage floor. The two couples became contradictory mirrors of each other: Larry calming and comforting Megan while Amita calmed and comforted Don.
After a few moments, Amita turned burning, fierce eyes towards the other couple, “Goddammit, Megan, this is my fiancé, Sergeant Don Eisenhart, New Jersey State Police.”
