Title: The Unexpected Addition

Challenge: #1 Conversation
Pairing/Characters: Don, Alan

Rating: K
Summary: Sometimes traditions change.
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: Nope.
Notes/Warnings: The continuation of The Perfect Card and The Unexpected Card.
Disclaimer:  I don’t own Numb3rs.  Heck, I don’t even understand most of it!  But, I find myself sounding like Larry some days.

“Hey, Dad.”

“Hey, Donnie.  We still on for next Sunday?”

“Of course.  The Dodgers on Father’s Day is a tradition.”

“Yeah…. Donnie would you mind too much, if we changed tradition a little?”

“What you want Charlie and I to shell out for dinner instead of bar-b-queing at the house?”

“No, I prefer going home after the game.  It’s just… Well, I thought it would be nice to invite Megan.”

“Megan?”

“Yeah, Megan.  Tall woman.  Very beautiful.  Carries a gun.  Ring any bells?”

“Ha ha, Dad, very funny.  I’m just surprised.  I mean, I like Megan, but this has always been a family thing.”

“What about Larry?  Larry been coming with us for years.”

“Yeah, but Larry’s family.”

“Now, maybe, but not always.”

“I’ve always liked Larry…. Snorting is not very dignified for a man of your years, Pop.”

“Whatever, we’re talking about Megan not Larry.  Would it be alright if I invited Megan to join us?”

“Dad, it’s Father’s Day, the only day of the year that Charlie and I have to do whatever you say without complaining.  If you want Megan to join us then Megan should join us.”

“Thanks, Donnie.  Are you coming for dinner?”

“Of course.”

Title: The Perfect Addition

Challenge: #76 Girlfriend

Pairing/Characters: Charlie

Rating: K
Summary: Sometimes traditions change.
Word Count: 250
Spoilers: Nope.
Notes/Warnings: The continuation of The Perfect Card, The Unexpected Card, and The Unexpected Addition.
Disclaimer:  I don’t own Numb3rs.  Heck, I don’t even understand most of it!  But, I find myself sounding like Larry some days.

It should be jarring, like the sound of a White Strips song being played loudly on a circa 1992 boom box from the back seat of a circa 1932 car, but its not.  In fact, somehow it is a perfect fit.  The strong Special Agent and the quirky Physics Professor sharing a rather passionate embrace in our… my driveway.

Larry’s got a girlfriend.

And if his girlfriend didn’t carry a gun, I’d be teasing the heck out of him about it.

Then again, judging by the look on my father’s face, I don’t think teasing him would be safe on any level.  Dad’s got the “Papa Bear” look going right now.  Normally, this look is reserved for people that are bothering Donnie or me, but right now it is being directed at us.  An unvoiced threat that if either of us even move towards the couple in front of us, there will be hell to pay.

It should be jarring, like the third Father’s Day card sitting between Don and mine on the mantle, but its not.  In fact, somehow it is a perfect fit.  The strong Special Agent and the loving Father sharing a tender bond of the heart.

Dad’s got a daughter.

And if his daughter didn’t carry a gun, I’d be teasing the heck out of him about it.

Then again, if Dad’s gained a daughter that means I gained a sister and I don’t have worry about the whole hugging thing.

Yup, that sounds about perfect.

Title: An Unexpected Family at a Perfect Game

Challenge: #6 Third Person
Pairing/Characters: Charlie, Don, Alan, Megan, Larry, Some Random Lady at a Dodger’s Game.

Rating: K
Summary: A beautiful day at the ballpark.
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Nope.
Notes/Warnings: The continuation of The Perfect Card, The Unexpected Card, The Unexpected Addition, and The Perfect Addition.
Disclaimer:  I don’t own Numb3rs.  Heck, I don’t even understand most of it!  But, I find myself sounding like Larry some days.

Since my brothers can’t be here for Father’s Day I wanted to make the day special for my dad.   Still I’m enjoying the family in front of me much more than the game.

I’m pretty sure that I’ve worked out the dynamics.  The older man in the middle is the father.  His sons, who look strikingly like him, are on his left.  His stepdaughter, at first I assumed that the lone woman with them was the older man’s daughter, but then she called him Alan, and her husband/boyfriend on his right.  The love radiated off all five of them in such waves that it was nearly visible in the afternoon sun.  There they sit: Charlie, the youngest; Don, the eldest; Alan, the father; Megan, the stepdaughter; and Larry, the in-law.  Or at least that is what I can determine from my eavesdropping.

Several innings later, a minor skirmish breaks out amongst them, resulting in Megan and Don throwing a good deal of popcorn at Charlie.  Alan roars in that ‘father’s voice’ that makes not only his clan, but several other people around him, settle down immediately.

I can feel my father’s laughter building next to me.  Finally, he lets out a guffaw that causes the entire row to turn and look at us.

Dad leans forward, “I’ve got three of my own, man, and when they get together they always revert to being twelve.  Sweetest thing, ain’t it?”

There is a twinkle in his eye, when Alan answers, “Best Father’s Day present you could ever ask for.”  Turning back around, his arm reaches out around Don until his hand lands on Charlie’s shoulder, while his other hand covers Megan’s.

My own hand slips into my father’s as my head settles on his shoulder.  Yup, it is a good Father’s Day.
